(CLO) Heavy snowfall caused many disruptions in Europe last Sunday, especially seriously affecting air traffic in the UK and Germany.

A number of airports across the UK have closed runways due to heavy snow and ice. According to the Met Office, most of Northern Ireland, much of Scotland and northern England are under snow and ice warnings. Almost all of Wales is under a heavy rain warning.

The country's third-largest airport, Manchester, temporarily closed its runway on Sunday morning. It reopened at 9:45 a.m. local time after crews cleared the snow. Liverpool's John Lennon Airport also closed its runway in the morning but reopened at 10:15 a.m.

Newcastle International Airport said the heavy snowfall had disrupted flight schedules. Airport staff were working hard to ensure the safety of passengers and colleagues. Birmingham Airport was closed for several hours in the middle of the night as staff cleared the snow, but reopened on Sunday after working through the night.

In the west of England, Bristol Airport was closed on Saturday due to “severe weather conditions” but reopened later that evening. However, flights departing on Sunday were still affected.

Trains in England, Scotland and Wales are also facing difficulties. National Rail, the UK's national rail operator, said: "Ice may force us to impose speed restrictions or line closures to ensure the safety of trains."

National Highways, the UK's main road management agency, has issued a severe weather warning across the country, urging people to take caution when travelling over the weekend.

In Germany, snow and black ice, along with poor visibility, have caused dozens of flight cancellations at Frankfurt Airport, the country's largest. A total of 120 of the airport's approximately 1,090 flights have been canceled.

At Munich airport, only one runway is operational. The German Meteorological Agency warned that freezing rain and snow will continue on Sunday, and advised people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Severe weather is causing major disruption to travel in many parts of Europe. Local authorities in both the UK and Germany have urged people to limit their travel to ensure safety and avoid unnecessary risks.
