Phase 1: Ben Thanh - Tham Luong
Yesterday (February 17), the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) officially organized the simultaneous construction of the relocation of technical infrastructure works for phase 1 of the project (Tham Luong - Ben Cat metro line), with the goal of constructing the tunnel and stations in 2025, completing in 2030.
With a length of more than 11 km (of which the underground section is more than 9 km long; the elevated section is nearly 2 km long); 10 stations (9 underground stations, 1 elevated station), the project passes through 6 districts: 1, 3, 10, 12, Tan Binh, Tan Phu
The project was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on October 11, 2010 and approved for adjustment in Decision No. 4880 dated November 14, 2019. The project has a total investment of nearly VND 47,900 billion, using ODA loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the German Reconstruction Bank (KfW), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and counterpart funds from the budget.
In 2024, how far will metro line 2 in Ho Chi Minh City be implemented?
According to plan, metro line 2 will be completed in 2026. However, due to difficulties in site clearance, the project's completion date has been postponed to 2030.
The project connects with urban railway line No. 1 and future lines No. 5, 3b, 4 and 6 (metro station No. 2 in Ba Queo will connect with line No. 6) to form an urban railway system that conveniently transfers passengers along the east-west axis to the city center; contributing significantly to reducing traffic congestion, traffic accidents and improving the urban environment along the route.

Phase 2: Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section and Tham Luong - Tay Ninh Bus Station section
The total length of the two sections is about 9.1 km (including 4.2 km underground and 4.9 km elevated). Phase 2 of the project has 9 stations (6 underground and 3 elevated). Tham Luong Depot is located in District 12.
The construction of the metro line from Ben Thanh station (under the Saigon River) to Thu Thiem station aims to strongly promote the development of the new urban area of Thu Thiem and Thu Duc City.
The total investment for this phase is estimated at 1.482 billion USD, expected to be invested by ODA capital or public-private partnership (PPP)... Currently, MAUR is completing the Pre-Feasibility Study Report for the entire route.
Metro Line 2 is the longest radial line in the metro network in Ho Chi Minh City.
Phase 3: Tay Ninh Bus Station - Cu Chi Northwest Area
This is the longest section of metro line 2 - about 28 km completely elevated. According to the plan, this section will pass through 22 stations, Phuoc Hiep depot located in Cu Chi.
The total investment (estimated) is about 2.714 billion USD, also expected to be implemented under the public-private partnership (PPP) method or other sources if Ho Chi Minh City is assigned new mechanisms to implement the metro. Currently, the project is in the final report stage of preparing the Pre-Feasibility Study Report.
After completing all 3 phases, metro line 2 will be extended in the direction from Northwest Urban Area (Cu Chi District) - National Highway 22 - Tay Ninh Bus Station - Truong Chinh - Tham Luong - Cach Mang Thang Tam - Pham Hong Thai - Le Lai - Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem. This urban railway line will create conditions for synchronous development with the Ho Chi Minh City - Tay Ninh railway line (in the planning), Ring Road 3, Ring Road 4 of Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai expressway to build a complete, multi-modal transportation system combined with promoting the development of urban areas along the route as well as connecting with neighboring provinces of Tay Ninh and Long An.
Metro line 2 phase 2 is almost entirely underground along Cach Mang Thang Tam street and Truong Chinh street.
Previously, MAUR had proposed to build a project of about 2,100 billion VND underground to synchronously connect urban railway lines 1 and 2 at Ben Thanh station area. According to preliminary research, passengers using metro lines 1 and 2 share 6 entrances to access level B1 of station line 1. After that, passengers who need to use metro line 2 continue to go down to the waiting area floor of line 2 through the connecting staircase system (stairs, escalators and elevators).
At the same time, passengers from line 2 can directly access the waiting room of line 1 using this staircase system.
