Tuoi Tre reporters have also recorded many times the phenomenon of bus drivers running red lights.
Passersby are bored.
At 1:55 p.m. on June 21, bus number 72 (running from Saigon bus station to Hiep Phuoc) deliberately ran a red light at the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh and Nguyen Huu Tho streets (District 7). In the middle of a crowded stream of motorbikes, the bus driver carelessly drove ahead despite the light having just turned red, causing the people behind him to shake their heads in dismay.
From information provided by Tuoi Tre newspaper, the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center identified the driver who ran the red light as PVL - belonging to Ho Chi Minh City Transport Joint Stock Company.
The center has requested the management company to suspend the driver, continue to impose penalties according to the contract and transfer the case to the police for handling.
At 7:19 p.m. on June 6, passersby were shocked when bus route 30 (Tan Huong market - International University) was running "noisily" on Luy Ban Bich street (Tan Phu district) towards the intersection of Au Co - Ba Van streets. The driver honked loudly and "tried to stretch" the bus to run through the red light at this intersection to enter Ba Van street, in front of a crowded stream of motorbikes.
"At this time, there are a lot of vehicles at the intersection, so it's very dangerous. If there is an unexpected situation and the bus can't brake in time, it will have serious consequences," said a technology car driver.
Processing via surveillance camera
The situation of bus drivers running red lights has been quite common recently, and some violations have been handled by authorities.
For example, on May 26, bus route 03 (Ben Thanh - Thanh Xuan) went to Ha Huy Giap street (District 12) and encountered a red light. The driver did not stop but turned right, circled around the island, then turned back to the original direction to run the red light, almost colliding with another car.
The driver was later identified as Liu Jun, under the management of the 19-5 Transport Cooperative and was suspended from driving.
At the same time, Phu Lam Traffic Police Team under the Road and Railway Traffic Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police worked with driver MVC (61 years old) - driving bus route 81 (Cho Lon bus station - Le Minh Xuan) of Viet Thang inter-provincial transport and tourism cooperative - for driving in the wrong lane and running a red light at the intersection of Nguyen Van Giau - Thanh Nien (Binh Chanh district).
This bus was recorded by a car's dashcam and posted on social media. Mr. C. was fined 10 million VND and had his driver's license revoked for 3 months.
According to the leader of the Traffic Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police, not only by direct inspection, the units also process through surveillance camera images to not affect the travel route of passengers on the vehicle.
Through that, Ho Chi Minh City also has sanctions to deter and strictly punish violations, aiming to rectify the violations of the driver team.
Lane change, driving and using phone at the same time
In addition to running red lights, the situation of buses taking up all motorbike lanes also occurs on many roads in Ho Chi Minh City.
Recorded at 4:21 p.m. on June 19, bus number 24 (running from Mien Dong bus station to Hoc Mon) running on National Highway 22, from An Suong intersection to Hoc Mon, continuously encroached on the motorbike lane and pulled into the passenger pick-up station, forcing motorcyclists who could not pass to drive onto the sidewalk "reluctantly".
Most recently, on June 27, social media also spread a video recording a bus driver driving while looking at his phone.
According to the video, the male driver was driving a bus with license plate 51B - 216.88 on Phu Huu Street, Ward 14, District 5. Even though the bus was moving through busy intersections and there were cars running in front, the driver was still calmly looking at his phone.
