A representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications said that from September 15, 2024, mobile devices that can only use the 2G mobile network will be stopped and will not be able to connect to mobile networks.

4G smartphones still connect normally.

"The complete cessation of the 2G mobile network frequency band will follow the roadmap and plan of the Ministry of Information and Communications in the coming time," said a representative of the City Department of Information and Communications.

To prepare for the implementation of the plan to stop 2G mobile waves, the Ministry of Information and Communications has banned the import, production, and sale of mobile phone devices that only use 2G mobile networks from July 1, 2021.

According to a representative of the City Department of Information and Communications, at the end of 2023, the department coordinated with the People's Committee of Thu Duc City and districts to inspect phone buying and selling points and stores. Through inspection, no store was found to be trading or selling phone devices with only 2G network.

"To develop 5G, 6G... or other services using radio frequency bands, it is necessary to reclaim frequency bands with little value to give this frequency band to deploy for services with higher value," said a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications.

He added that according to the first quarter 2024 data provided by the Department of Telecommunications - Ministry of Information and Communications, mobile subscribers in the city reached more than 14 million subscribers. Subscribers using smartphones (smartphones) with 3G and 4G connections reached more than 10.6 million devices.

From there, the representative of the City Department of Information and Communications stated that the suspension of mobile waves supporting only 2G from September 2024 and the roadmap to completely stop the 2G mobile network in the city by the Ministry of Information and Communications is inevitable, with little impact on the people.
