Death penalty for murderer of motorbike taxi driver, robber

On June 28, the People's Court of Bac Lieu province held a first-instance trial and sentenced Nguyen Van Vu (23 years old, residing in Bo Cang hamlet, Dien Hai commune, Dong Hai district, Bac Lieu) to death for two crimes: murder and robbery. At the same time, the defendant was ordered to compensate the victim's family nearly 180 million VND and provide for the victim's 3 children until they turn 18 years old.

According to the indictment, at around 4:00 p.m. on January 18, 2023 (ie the 27th day of the Lunar New Year 2023), Vu took a bus from Mien Tay Bus Station (HCMC) to Can Tho Bus Station. After that, Vu hired a motorbike taxi from Mr. Dao Van Ut (42 years old, residing in Can Tho City) to go from Can Tho Bus Station to Bac Lieu for 800,000 VND.

With the motive and purpose of killing Ut to rob his property, Vu had two knives ready and deliberately asked Ut to run into a deserted road. At about 11:40 p.m. on January 18, 2023, when reaching the Truong Son dike (in Buu 2 hamlet, Long Dien Dong commune, Dong Hai district, Bac Lieu), Vu used a knife to stab Ut many times in the neck, causing him to die on the spot.

Vu then took more than 1.2 million VND, 2 mobile phones and a motorbike from the victim’s pocket to escape the scene. On the way, Vu threw away some personal documents and the murder weapon.

At around 8:00 p.m. on January 20, 2023, the Investigation Police Agency of Bac Lieu Province arrested Vu while he was hiding at a relative's house in the same locality, and seized many related exhibits.
