Turning down many opportunities abroad, young associate professor chooses to return home to contribute

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Dat (35 years old), working at the Faculty of Banking, University of Economics (University of Danang) has just been awarded the title of associate professor in 2023 by the State Council of Professors.

Returning home to contribute after studying abroad

As a former student of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted ( Da Nang City), Dat has many remarkable achievements. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Technology (Da Nang). A year later, following his family's direction, Dat went to Australia and studied economics at La Trobe University.

After completing his undergraduate program with an excellent degree, Mr. Dat was considered for a PhD. By the end of 2015, he graduated with a PhD from La Trobe University. Although there were many opportunities to work abroad, he chose to return home to contribute and work at the University of Economics (University of Danang). Talking about the reason for his decision to return to Vietnam, Mr. Dat shared: "Firstly, it was due to his family's wishes, and secondly, he also wanted to contribute to his homeland ."

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Dat has just been awarded the title of associate professor by the State Council of Professors at the age of 35.

After many years of working with positive contributions in the field of research, Mr. Dat was recently awarded the title of associate professor. "It was a long preparation process. The title of associate professor is an important milestone recognizing my efforts and hard work over the past time. This will also be a motivation for me to try harder in the process of research and teaching," he shared.

The young associate professor clearly understands the significance of scientific research based on the urgency to create contributions, introduce new methods and results closely linked to practice. Therefore, Mr. Dat always hopes that his initiatives will be applied and contribute to solving problems in life.

Many works are recognized

To date, Mr. Dat has completed 3 scientific research topics from the grassroots level and above. At the same time, he has published 32 scientific articles, of which 14 were published in prestigious international journals.

Sharing about his research directions in recent times, Mr. Dat said: "I pursue three main research directions, which are fiscal and monetary policy; the impact of risks on the stock market and the financial decision-making process of companies; and banking operations."

Talking about the research topic that he is most passionate about, Mr. Dat said it is Running Out of Bank Runs , published in the Journal of Financial Services Research . "This topic studies the behavior of people who deposit money in banks and their motivations when withdrawing money. From there, I can give policy implications on how banks can prevent people from withdrawing money in droves. The topic lasted for 8 consecutive years and despite many difficulties, we did not give up. Although I am not the main author of this topic, because of the effort I put in and its high practical applicability, I am very passionate about it," said Mr. Dat.

The young associate professor also advised: "Young people who want to pursue scientific research need to have a good foundation and understand the methods. These things need to be formed early in the learning process, trained through reading documents. For example, when reading a scientific publication, you must have critical thinking, analyze the good aspects of that work and its limitations. In addition, you also need to have a receptive attitude, perseverance, observation and a way of looking at problems. From there, research ideas will arise."

Mr. Dat has directly guided 7 graduate students to successfully defend their master's theses. In 2022, Mr. Dat was honored to receive the title of Central-level Young Teacher awarded by the Central Youth Union.

Not only has he made many contributions in the fields of research and teaching, he is also a very active, responsible and courageous Youth Union Secretary. Having been involved in Youth Union activities since 2016, Mr. Dat has launched many movements, calling on young people to promote the spirit of initiative and volunteerism.

Sharing about his future plans, the young associate professor said he will continue to strive to fulfill his duties and actively create useful movements for students. At the same time, he will continue to maintain and perfect his projects and research topics.
