Flooded school, teachers and students in Nam Dinh build a "bridge" to get to class

In recent days, due to the impact of storm No. 3, Nam Dinh has been experiencing continuous rain. High tides combined with the discharge of floodwaters from upstream reservoirs have caused the water levels of rivers to rise rapidly, causing localized flooding in many low-lying areas and along dikes, seriously affecting people's lives and activities. The education sector has also been significantly affected, with many schools having to close due to flooding.
Up to now, flood water in the rivers has receded, but some low-lying areas of Nam Dinh are still flooded.
Tables and chairs become "bridges"
According to the reporter's records at Nguyen Trai High School (Truc Ninh district, Nam Dinh), the water in the school campus has not yet completely receded. The school's Board of Directors representative said: The school has 24 classrooms with 981 students. The school's facilities were not damaged much during the recent storm, and the classrooms are still safe. However, due to prolonged rain and floods, since September 9, floodwaters have flooded the schoolyard and the first floor classrooms, with the deepest point being about one meter. This is the first time the school has been flooded so deeply. At that time, to ensure safety, the school let students stay home. When safety was assured, the school let students return to school so as not to miss out on knowledge. The classroom area on the first floor was affected, students will study in the functional rooms on the second floor. The schoolyard was still deeply flooded, making it difficult for students to move to class. Due to its location in a low-lying area, the school determined that the water would take a long time to recede, so to avoid students having to wade through the water to get to class, the teachers came up with a plan to use stone benches and old desks stored in the warehouse as a "bridge" for students to move from the school gate to the classroom safely, without getting wet. According to the leader, the special "bridge" is made of about 50 stone benches and more than 70 old tables, divided into two directions from the school gate to move between buildings. Students' vehicles will be parked outside the school gate and guarded by security. Hoang Minh Tung (a male student wearing glasses), a 10A student at Nguyen Trai High School, said: “I thank the teachers for their initiative to help us continue to go to school. Thanks to this ‘bridge’, I can go from the school gate to class without having to wade through water.” Since September 18, the water has gradually receded, the deepest flooded point in the school yard is about 30 - 40cm, so this "bridge" will continue to be used until the water in the yard recedes completely.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Tran Hai Bang, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Truc Ninh district (Nam Dinh province) said that the district has 64 educational institutions (including 21 kindergartens, 21 primary schools, 22 secondary schools) and 5 high schools. During the recent flood, nearly 10 schools were deeply flooded, students had to stay home from school for several days. Currently, students from all schools have returned to school, however, some schools are located in low-lying areas where the water has not yet receded, such as Truc Noi Primary School, Trung Dong Kindergarten, Nguyen Trai High School, etc.
