Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee supports people in Thua Thien Hue affected by floods

Faced with the severe flood situation in Thua Thien Hue province, on November 16, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society decided to provide initial emergency relief in cash and goods.

The support package worth 220 million VND includes 100 million VND in cash and 200 boxes of household goods with essential items. Poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged families whose homes and livelihoods have been damaged, whose members have died, gone missing, or been injured due to floods will receive emergency relief.

According to the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, on the afternoon of November 16, goods were transported from the Central warehouse located in Da Nang to Thua Thien Hue province to promptly deliver to local people.

Previously, from November 13 to 15, Thua Thien Hue province had heavy and very heavy rain. Nam Dong district and some places in Phu Loc district had especially heavy rain, with average rainfall of 500-900mm. In particular, some places had more rain such as Xuan Loc, Phu Loc 1,111mm; Thuong Quang, Nam Dong 1,028mm; Bach Ma National Park 1,006mm.

Floods on the Huong River and Bo River peaked in the afternoon and evening of November 15. The floodwaters are now receding slowly. The water level of the Huong River has exceeded the 2020 flood peak (4.1m), and at 4am on November 16 it was still at 3.41m.

According to the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Thua Thien Hue province, 85% of the roads in 36 wards and communes in Hue city were flooded, many roads were deeply flooded, and traffic was cut off. The historical relic of Hue Citadel was also submerged in floodwaters.

More than 17,340 houses in the province were flooded. Localities evacuated more than 3,960 households, about 10,800 people. People have now returned home.

Floodwaters are receding, but according to forecasts from the afternoon of November 16 to November 18, Thua Thien Hue will have moderate to heavy rain, and in some places very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 30-80mm, and in some places over 120mm. Therefore, the risk of re-flooding in many areas is still very high, with many potential risks and dangers.

People are advised not to lower their belongings to low places to avoid loss or damage.
