Farmers in two upstream districts of the Tien River, Cai Lay and Cai Be districts of Tien Giang province, have converted nearly 13,000 hectares of cultivated land in difficult areas, often affected by floods in the Mekong River, to grow specialized Thai jackfruit, bringing high economic efficiency.
In order to achieve the goal of converting production to adapt to climate change and "living with floods", farmers in two upstream districts of the Tien River (Tien Giang province): Cai Lay and Cai Be have converted nearly 13,000 hectares of cultivated land in difficult areas, often affected by floods in the Mekong River, to grow specialized Thai jackfruit, bringing high economic efficiency.
With an average yield of about 20 tons/ha, the whole region achieves an annual output of 260,000 to 300,000 tons of fruit for consumption and export.
Thai jackfruit is suitable for local soil and climate, has high productivity and favorable output. Thai jackfruit prices fluctuate but are both consumed domestically and favored by export markets, especially China.
Fortunately, this year, Thai jackfruit prices remain high, bringing in a good income, and farmers are very excited. According to Nguyen Thi Lac, Director of the Cai Lay District Agricultural Service Center, in the first 9 months of 2024, Thai jackfruit in the area always had a good price.
In early October 2024, the price of Thai jackfruit grade 1 was about 38,000 VND/kg, grade 2 was about 21,000 VND/kg, and grade 3 was about 9,000-10,000 VND/kg.
At this price, after deducting costs, farmers earn a profit of 150 million to 200 million VND/ha, many times higher than growing high-yield rice with unstable income before.
Therefore, farmers with jackfruit gardens harvested at this time are very excited by the high profits, building a career from specialty crops.

Farmer Nguyen Minh Hieu, who has 3,000 m2 of Thai jackfruit in Ward 4, Cai Lay town, happily said that yesterday he sold the first crop of 5 jackfruits and earned nearly 1 million VND. It is expected that in the coming days, his Thai jackfruit garden will enter the peak harvest season, promising a bumper crop.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nha, residing in Hamlet 7, My Thanh Nam Commune (Cai Lay District) converted 2.2 hectares of rice land to grow Thai jackfruit. He said that after 3 years, Thai jackfruit has produced fruit and can be harvested almost all year round.
Thai jackfruit yields are always high, averaging 25 to 30 tons/ha/year under good care. By switching to growing Thai jackfruit, he has built a solid foundation on the formerly flooded land.
In order to help local farmers promote the potential of Thai jackfruit to reduce rural poverty, Cai Lay and Cai Be districts focus on transferring intensive Thai jackfruit cultivation techniques according to GAP.
The district also synchronously implemented solutions to improve the quality of agricultural products, encourage organizations, individuals, and farmers to establish specialized growing areas, and implement the issuance of growing area codes to serve the official export of Thai jackfruit to the Chinese market, attracting foreign currency.
In Cai Lay district, Cai Lay District Agricultural Service Center is investing over 218 million VND to implement the model of "Growing and intensively cultivating jackfruit according to GAP criteria" on a scale of 2 hectares in Binh Phu town in an effort to transfer Thai jackfruit growing techniques and improve jackfruit intensive cultivation skills for farmers in specialized areas. It is expected that in November 2024, the jackfruit growing model will be summarized, evaluated and widely replicated for farmers to apply.
In order to create an export material area, meeting the criteria for official export of fruits in general and Thai jackfruit in particular, in the specialized areas of Cai Lay and Cai Be districts, 47 export jackfruit growing area codes have been granted with a total area of over 7,500 hectares.
Localities are expecting that with efforts to create high-quality raw material areas for stable output to supply the market, further promoting the potential and strengths of the fruit export industry, farmers in the flood-prone districts of the Tien River headwaters will have an additional source of high and stable income from specialized Thai jackfruit gardens, helping to stabilize and improve living standards while successfully innovating agriculture - rural areas and building new rural areas in the area.
