Growing super-yielding cucumbers for super profits
Being workers with a stable income, Quach Ngoc Kien and his wife in Long hamlet (Yen Tri commune, Yen Thuy district - Hoa Binh) decided to leave the city to return to their hometown to do farming. While struggling to find suitable crops, Mr. Kien heard about a super-yielding cucumber variety. Learning more on social networks as well as the experiences of other gardeners, Mr. Kien decided to try starting a business with this variety of cucumber on his family's 2 sao of land.

The result was surprising, the melon variety he tested was superior in yield, 3-4 times higher than other cucumber varieties. Mr. Kien bought 4 bags of seeds (priced at 125,000 VND/bag), after more than 2 months the melon garden began to be harvested. Currently, only about 70% of the crop has been harvested, he has picked about 2.9 - 3 tons of melons. The selling price at this time is 9,000 VND/kg, he earned 27 million VND, minus investment costs, he made a profit of 25 million VND; a figure that when he was a worker, he and his wife "couldn't even dream of".
In the near future, the couple plans to use all 5,000 square meters of their family's land to expand this melon variety. "Every year, my wife and I will slowly grow two crops, and after deducting expenses, we will still make a profit of hundreds of millions of dong," Kien shared.
Also choosing a super-yielding cucumber variety, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tam in Team 1, Thach Quang Farm, Thach Thanh (Thanh Hoa) has been growing it for 2 years. If the weather is favorable, Mr. Tam can cultivate up to 4 crops of cucumbers on an area of more than 1 hectare. He said: "With the same area of land, I used to grow galangal, eggplant, and lemongrass... but the yield was unstable and the income was not significant. Since I learned about this cucumber variety, with the same area, I have a crop that is 3-4 times more profitable than other crops."

Currently, Mr. Tam's garden is harvesting with an average yield of 7-8 quintals/day, the market price is 9,000 VND/kg, each day he earns about 7 million VND. "If the weather is favorable, there are seasons when I earn up to 150 million VND, after deducting all expenses, I can also earn about 400 million VND/year. Compared to growing other vegetables, the income is really impressive" - Mr. Tam commented.
Thanks to investing in a drip irrigation system, Mr. Tam not only reduced the care work but also optimized costs, making growing this super-yielding melon variety easier and more effective than ever.
He shared that, compared to growing traditional plants such as eggplant, squash, and sticky cucumbers before, the VA886 cucumber variety is much more effective. "The plants grow well, have few pests and diseases, have stable productivity, and high yield. With other plants, they often require careful care and higher investment costs, but the VA886 cucumber saves a lot of time and effort," Mr. Tam happily said.
Continue to improve productivity and quality
The melon variety that both Mr. Kien and Mr. Tam are using is VA 886, provided by Viet A Agricultural Development Company Limited. This is a melon variety originating from China, granted a protection certificate by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and exclusively distributed in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huy Dong, Director of Viet A Agricultural Development Company Limited, what makes VA 886 special is its outstanding adaptability, suitable for a variety of climatic conditions from North to South. In particular, the biggest advantage of VA 886 is high productivity, good disease resistance and low investment costs.
"With only 400,000 VND for each 2 sao area, the yield can reach 2.5 - 2.9 tons, much higher than other varieties on the market" - Mr. Dong emphasized - "Not only helping people increase their income, VA886 variety is also easy to grow, requires little use of chemicals, so the product is very safe for consumers".

According to a survey by Viet A Company and distributors, most of the feedback from growers was very positive. Mr. Truong Ngoc Tung, a distributor in Yen Thuy (Hoa Binh) shared: "VA886 is well received by farmers because it not only has high productivity but also has few pests and diseases and is easy to care for. In particular, this variety can be grown almost all year round in the South and 8 months of summer and autumn in the North, so farmers almost do not have to worry about the season."
Both Mr. Kien and Mr. Tam agree that the VA886 melon variety has many advantages, but things don’t always go smoothly. One of the biggest problems is the erratic weather.
"Although VA886 has good heat resistance, harsh weather such as prolonged heat or sudden heavy rain can also affect crop yields. Especially in off-season crops, the difference in climate forces farmers to invest more in cover and irrigation systems to protect crops, increasing production costs," said Mr. Kien.
In addition, the consumption market is not always stable. "The price of cucumbers is not fixed but depends a lot on supply and demand. Sometimes the price of cucumbers drops to 2,500 VND/kg, making it difficult for farmers to make a living," said Mr. Tam. This requires farmers to have flexible farming plans to avoid oversupply during peak season.

Talking about the limitations of the VA 886 melon variety, Mr. Nguyen Huy Dong revealed: "In the coming time, Viet A Company aims to expand the VA886 distribution market to more provinces and cities, with the desire to capture most of the domestic market. Besides, we are also cooperating with partners in China to continue researching and developing this melon variety, further improving its resistance to weather and enhancing seed quality."
"We not only want to produce a high-yielding melon variety, but also want to improve the quality of each melon, to meet the most stringent standards from domestic and foreign markets," Mr. Dong emphasized.
