Born in 1982, dark skin, short and stocky, a bit rough looking but don't let that rough exterior fool you. In fact, this man in his forties is a man with a vision worth learning from, everywhere he goes from the South to the North, he leaves a difference. Right in the barren land of Nghe An full of sun and wind, he has also produced fragrant flowers and sweet fruits after only 5 years of cultivation.

He is Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of Thanh Vinh Agricultural Cooperative (located in Soi Bai area, Long Xa commune, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province). When talking about organic agriculture, Mr. Thanh talks passionately without getting bored, from the story of "living with his wife's family" to the journey to create a breakthrough in the alluvial land along the Lam River.
“My point of view is to do it for myself and spread it to the community, when everyone benefits, a strong bond will be formed. My wife is from Nghe An, to have the opportunity to be close to the family and promote the inherent strengths, in 2019 I proposed to the competent authority to allocate land to move forward with the model, 1 year later I rolled up my sleeves and started working on a scale of 8.5 hectares.
At first, I grew ginseng, but after a while, I realized that the soil conditions here were suitable for commercial vegetables, so I proactively expanded the form, arranging to grow cucumbers and squash. Each type is an unrelated area, but the common point is that it gives high economic value, thereby attracting many households to join the association," Mr. Thanh shared.

Having been implementing parallel production in provinces such as Lang Son, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Son La, Thanh Hoa..., with his extensive experience, Mr. Thanh is fully capable of making his mark in the new land. The outstanding economic efficiency from the fields has won the trust of many people, many farmers with muddy hands and feet who are used to traditional farming methods have completely changed their way of thinking when joining hands with Thanh Vinh Cooperative.
Mr. Thanh confided: “People in this area used to specialize in growing corn, but the harvest was good and the harvest was bad, and the economic efficiency was not high. Since joining the association and boldly changing the crop structure, the situation has changed a lot. The cooperative can only develop when it has the trust of partners and people. With that in mind, we proactively signed a clear product purchase contract to motivate people. For cucumbers, the minimum purchase price is 4,500 VND/kg and flexibly increases according to market developments, sometimes increasing by 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg.

Even at the minimum price, farmers can earn over 50 million VND/ha. If the price is good and the harvest is good, the net profit can increase 2-3 times. Growing Burdock ginseng to serve the needs of macrobiotics (high-class vegetarianism, or deep processing to make tea bags, nutritious soup for cancer patients) can bring in much more income. If the correct technical process is applied, it can earn 15-20 tons/ha, with a selling price of 30,000 VND/kg, the total revenue is around 600 million VND/ha, deducting costs, enough to make a profit of half.
The Director of Thanh Vinh Agricultural Cooperative confirmed that he has invested more than 5 billion VND in the farm to invest in facilities, apply advanced equipment (drip irrigation system, sprinkler irrigation, technological trellis...) according to organic standards.
From the initial small scale, the Cooperative has strongly increased the production linkage area year by year, reaching nearly 50 hectares in 2023, currently it has tripled, spread across districts with strengths in growing colors in Nghe An such as Do Luong, Anh Son, Tan Ky, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen...
The next destination of the Cooperative is to build a production and deep processing factory to continue to replicate the model throughout Nghe An province.

“Thanh Vinh Agricultural Cooperative is the leader of a strong connection thanks to its methodical approach, above all, it knows how to elevate traditional agricultural products, demonstrated through cucumber products that have been certified to meet organic standards. During the production process, the unit has strictly followed regulations and procedures, gaining the trust of partners and consumers.
In the coming time, the Center will coordinate and support the Cooperative to develop the garden-pond-barn (VAC) economic model in the direction of circular agriculture. The treatment of livestock waste by raising earthworms to make organic fertilizer not only saves costs but also improves economic efficiency, while minimizing environmental pollution", Mr. Nguyen Kim Hung, Head of the Department of Transfer of Scientific and Technical Advances (Nghe An Agricultural Extension Center) assessed.
