This morning, April 14, Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan - Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - represented the "Clean Water for the Lower Region" program to send clean water trucks to several communes in Can Duoc and Can Giuoc, Long An province.
Due to the impact of climate change, since the beginning of the year, drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion have occurred in some localities in the Mekong Delta, including Long An province.
According to the Long An Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation, in the 2024 dry season, there will be a widespread shortage of domestic water in the lower districts of the province, with nearly 5,000 households affected, mainly in the two districts of Can Giuoc and Can Duoc.
People living in Can Giuoc and Can Duoc districts are facing difficulties due to some areas suffering from local water shortages and weak water supply. Water shortages are widespread, water supply is insufficient, and people's lives are facing many difficulties.
"The Saemaul Undong Rural Development Center of the school has been carrying out many activities and projects for socio-economic development in Long An province, so we know and sympathize with the difficulties caused by the lack of clean water of the people here.
Therefore, the school implemented the charity program "Clean water in the lowlands" to support people with clean water to use during the peak of hot weather," Ms. Lan shared.
Mr. Pham Thanh Duy - Head of the school's General Administration Department - added: "This program is of great interest to the school principal personally, directly joining hands with the school community to contribute a small part to help the locality and the people. Before implementing the program, the school coordinated with the locality to survey the needs of the people to provide appropriate funding."
This morning, the two localities arranged vehicles to increase water transport to remote areas from the water intake point. Due to the heavy load of the water tanker, it could not enter the dike areas.
When the water truck arrived, it was like "a drought meets a shower of rain", hundreds of people happily and excitedly brought water containers to receive clean water.

Will continue to support clean water for people
The program is an activity organized by the Saemaul Undong Rural Development Center in collaboration with the School's Women Intellectuals Association to support people facing difficulties due to lack of clean water for daily activities.
"In the first phase, the program provided 180m3 of clean water (Can Duoc 80m3, Can Giuoc 100m3). This clean water source was purchased by the school from Nha Be Water Plant, Ho Chi Minh City, from the funding contributed by individuals and units in the school.
Saemaul Undong Rural Development Center is still connecting with other units to continue providing clean water to the people," Ms. Lan added.
