A year ago, Le Thi Huyen hesitated at the threshold of university despite scoring 25 points in the B block exam. In the end, she decided not to apply.

A year later, Huyen determined to retake the exam and was admitted to the Banking Academy (Hanoi).

Put your dreams aside and go work as a waiter.

Huyen remembers that last year, when she turned 18, while her friends were packing up to go to the capital to study, she left her hometown Thanh Hoa, carrying her backpack to apply for a job at a porridge shop in Ha Dong district (Hanoi).

Her father died of esophageal cancer, her mother suffered from kidney failure and could not do heavy work. Huyen has two younger siblings who are still in school. Her family is poor, so Huyen had no other choice.

She told her mother: "I will take a year off from school to work to help you. If I can, I will continue studying next year."

Loving her daughter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong (Huyen's mother) could not bear to see her daughter's dream unfulfilled. She said she would take care of her daughter and advised her not to drop out of school.

But her husband passed away, the family was in dire straits, all the burdens fell on Mrs. Phuong's sick shoulders. From food money, medicine money for herself to the unpaid medical debt for her husband, she held back her tears, accepting that her daughter would temporarily put her dream on hold...

The first three months of staying in the capital, the job of serving was extremely hard, Huyen worked hard from morning to night. The area where she worked part-time was near many universities, every time she worked as a waiter, seeing her peers carrying their books to the lecture halls passing by, Huyen felt sorry for her situation.

"But that was my decision. Once I made the decision, I won't regret it, just a little sad" - Huyen confided.

Later, when her mother's health was not good, Huyen returned to her hometown to apply for a job at a birthday cake factory, receiving 150,000 VND in wages each day.

During her time working as a waitress, Huyen thought that if she continued this job, her future would be bleak. She also did not want to become a person without direction and lose her future.

"If I lose my future, I won't be able to take care of my mother or my siblings, so I decided to retake the exam. Even though it's hard and difficult, I'll have a better future to take care of my mother and siblings" - Huyen affirmed.

"Afraid that one day, I won't be able to pay my tuition."

The last two months - near the national high school exam, Huyen asked for leave from work to focus on studying.

After her father passed away, her mother's mood was unstable, she often cried and sometimes got angry. Huyen loved her mother very much, so no matter how hard it was, she didn't dare tell her mother, not wanting to upset her.

"At that time, I just tried, tried and tried! Sometimes I felt sad, I wished my dad was still here..." - Huyen burst into tears.

Finally, the little girl's efforts to study were rewarded. Passing the Hanoi National University's aptitude test, Huyen applied for admission to the Banking Academy and received notice of university admission .

Once again, Huyen packed her bags and headed to the capital alone. This time, it wasn’t to work part-time. She was determined to pursue her long-cherished dream of working in the banking sector.

But as soon as she set foot on the threshold of university, difficulties immediately came. The 10 million VND saved from months of part-time work was not enough to pay for tuition , so Huyen and her mother had to borrow another 10 million VND so that Huyen could pay for admission and dormitory fees.

Having no money to cover living expenses, Huyen knocked on the door of the clothing store in front of the school gate, but only received a shake of the head because her study schedule did not meet the job requirements.

"I'm very worried about the next four years of school. I'm afraid that one day I won't be able to pay the tuition and will have to drop out of school, missing out on my future again," Huyen said, tears falling as she let go of the grievances and hardships of the past year.

But having "missed the university boat" once, this time the new student from Thanh said she will try her best. First, she will find a part-time job, then borrow money from a policy bank to cover tuition fees for the next four years of study.

"After searching for information online, I learned that Tuoi Tre newspaper is offering a scholarship program called "Tiep suc den truong" (Fuel to School) for new students with difficult circumstances. I applied for a scholarship. Luckily, I received a notice from Tuoi Tre newspaper that I had received a scholarship. The moment I received the news, I felt like I had more confidence and motivation to continue my studies. Thank you to the sponsors and Tuoi Tre newspaper for giving me another opportunity to fulfill my dream" - Le Thi Huyen, a new student at the Banking Academy, shared.
