Montiel’s girlfriend is also accused of being involved. The two defendants face up to 15 years in prison for attempted murder. Another male suspect is also on trial.
The attempted murder of Ms Fernández, Argentina’s most prominent politician in two decades, shocked the public when live television footage of Montiel pointing a gun at Ms Fernández sent shockwaves through the country. World leaders and countries, including Pope Francis and the United States, condemned the incident.
Ms. Fernández, who served as President of Argentina from 2007 to 2015, is a controversial figure in the South American country, with many admiring her work for the country and its people, but also criticizing her populist political ideology. Ms. Fernández is a left-wing member of Argentina’s traditionally powerful Peronist party.
The trial into the attempted assassination of Ms. Fernández is expected to last up to a year and more than 200 witnesses will be called. The suspects remain in custody. Ms. Fernández has criticized the investigation and the court, saying it was a large-scale conspiracy that may have involved political opponents.
