According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, as of 7:00 a.m. on March 13, the water level at most stations in the downstream of the Saigon - Dong Nai River has changed little and remained at a high level above BĐ 3. The high tide peak above BĐ 2 is forecast to remain for the next 1-2 days. In Ho Chi Minh City, the risk of natural disasters due to high tides has reached level 2, potentially causing flooding in low-lying areas along the river, affecting the lives and activities of local people.
My Tho City flooded heavily in the dry season
In the Mekong Delta provinces, flooding due to high tides is still common in many places. Especially in My Tho City, many places are knee-deep, greatly affecting the lives and activities of local people. Many people who have lived in this city for a long time said that such severe flooding in the middle of the dry season is unprecedented.
During the current high tide, the water level at most downstream stations on river branches in the Mekong Delta has peaked at level 2 - 3. In some places such as Tra Vinh on the Co Chien River and Ganh Hao station in Bac Lieu, the high tide peak has exceeded level 3. The western provinces are facing level 2 risk. In the coming days, the high tide peak will decrease and the highest water level of the day will be at level 1.
Before the current high tide, on many main river branches in the Mekong Delta, the 4‰ salinity line was 2 - 16 km deeper than the same period in 2023. On some river branches such as Cua Tieu and Cua Dai, the salinity line was almost as deep as the historic drought year of 2016. The current high tide will bring salt water deep into the river branches, seriously affecting the water source for daily life as well as production in many places in the Mekong Delta.
Currently, about 30,000 households in the Mekong Delta are facing difficulties in domestic water supply while this year's drought and salinity season continues. There will be two more salinity intrusions in late March and early April.
