To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of painter Tran Phuc Duyen (1923-1993), Pham Le Collection, in collaboration with the late painter's family and Quang San Art Museum, organized the art heritage exhibition "Painting and Encounter: Tran Phuc Duyen".

Retrospective exhibition

The work will be displayed in the exhibition.

The exhibition will take place from July 22 to August 6 at Quang San Art Museum (189B/3 Nguyen Van Huong, Thao Dien Ward, Thu Duc City).

“Hoa Duyen Tuong Ngo” displays nearly 150 representative works of the creative career of the famous painter Tran Phuc Duyen since he graduated from the 16th class of the Indochina College of Fine Arts (1942-1945), opened a workshop in Hanoi (1948-1954), until he went to France (1954-1968), Switzerland (1968-1993) and died there.

Throughout his career, Tran Phuc Duyen has had more than 20 large and small exhibitions in both Vietnam and Europe, but this is a universal exhibition with most of his works being introduced to the public for the first time in the country, with a variety of materials: lacquer, silk, wood carving and sketches...

Retrospective exhibition

Audiences visit some works before the official opening day.

The exhibition space consists of 2 floors with a total area of about 600m2 , introducing works according to major thematic clusters: Life, Landscape, Still Life and Miniature Landscape, Ink and Zen Painting, Abstract, and Blessings.

After the death of artist Tran Phuc Duyen, all of his works, documents, and books were kept in a warehouse on the outskirts of Bern, Switzerland. For 20 years, this legacy lay dormant until 2018, when two collectors Pham Quoc Dat and Le Quang Vinh - known as Pham Le Collection - accidentally discovered it. From here began the independent collection journey of Pham Le Collection, they spent a lot of effort to learn more about the artist, meet his family in France and Vietnam. From there, opened a miraculous repatriation trip for the late artist's artworks.

Retrospective exhibition

The work will be displayed in the exhibition.

"As children far from home, we were truly moved when we first stood before his works full of love for our homeland. Looking at the paintings covered in dust from time, gradually reopening the archived sketches, and flipping through his notebooks, we silently promised to bring him back to his homeland one day soon. We believe that art and beauty lovers in Vietnam will welcome him, so that his soul after many years away from home will be able to soar over the rice fields full of flowers in Ha Tay, admire Ha Long Bay where he and his peers used to go together to collect samples for their works, immerse ourselves in the quiet moonlit nights, and above all, let him return to his beloved motherland" - Pham Le shared. That is also the reason why this collector decided to share the almost complete collection of important creative milestones of painter Tran Phuc Duyen with the public.

Retrospective exhibition

The work will be displayed in the exhibition.

Painter Tran Phuc Duyen belongs to the last generation of the Indochina College of Fine Arts, including Indochina painters living and working in Europe (including: Le Pho, Vu Cao Dam, Mai Thu, Le Thi Luu, Pham Thuc Chuong, Vo Lang, Tran Phuc Duyen, Pham Tang...), but only Tran Phuc Duyen has chosen to use lacquer as a main and consistent material for his paintings.

The exhibition curator, Ace Le, shared: “Tran Phuc Duyen is one of the most important lacquer painters to graduate from the Indochina College of Fine Arts. He was the first person to skillfully blend both Western academic painting and Eastern literati ink painting, and display them on Vietnamese lacquer paintings. After half a century of diligent study and practice, the artist has refined the visual language from decorative shapes to minimalist abstraction, thereby elevating the expressiveness of Vietnamese lacquer to the same level as Western oil painting.”
