Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai has just assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to preside over and coordinate with the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Civil and Industrial Works and related Departments, agencies and units to urgently supplement and complete the architectural design plan for the project to build a symphony, music and ballet theater in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area (abbreviated as Thu Thiem Theater).

Accordingly, the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City requested the above units to continue to research, carefully analyze, and specifically evaluate the theater's architectural design ideas, functionality, artistic value, synchronization, harmony, and suitability with the landscape, aesthetics, and urban architectural space including cultural services, cultural products, cuisine, etc.

In addition, the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City assigned units to supplement and complete the design plan of Thu Thiem theater to ensure a modern, multi-functional architectural design plan, with many types of performing arts such as Opera, symphony, ballet, reformed opera, seminars, exchanges, tourism...;

At the same time, the stage design for performances must meet the requirements of the most modern stages in the world, demonstrating the unique value of performing arts, forming the cultural heritage of Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition, the architectural design plan must ensure the criteria of unique design, aesthetic harmony, creating highlights in cultural, modern, scientific architectural design, harmonizing traditional values, combining the construction of "Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space"; creating a deep perception of the cultural values ​​of the project for each service object.

The design must also fully demonstrate civilized, modern, affectionate, popular, and humane elements to serve a wide range of people and tourists.

The leaders of Ho Chi Minh City require that the preparation process for implementation steps must be carefully researched and considered, continue to consult, listen to, and absorb the maximum opinions of experts, professionals in architectural and artistic design, artists specializing in symphony, ballet, reformed opera..., combined with research and absorption of the art designs of famous theaters in other countries.

Finally, the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City assigned the task of starting construction and implementing the project items to ensure progress according to the set plan; at the same time, it is possible to study and call for social investment in some items to build a Theater commensurate with the stature of Ho Chi Minh City.

In case of difficulties or problems arising beyond the authority, promptly consult and propose to the City People's Committee.

The Thu Thiem Theater project was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in October 2018, with a total investment of more than VND 1,500 billion, and is expected to be completed in 2022.

After that, the project investor proposed to increase the total project investment to nearly 2,000 billion VND and adjust the implementation period from 2018 to 2024.

Thu Thiem Theater has a capacity of 1,700 seats, including a large auditorium with 1,200 seats and a small auditorium with 500 seats. At the end of 2021, the investor awarded 2 second prizes (no first prize) to 2 units participating in the architectural design concept competition for the theater project.

Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to prepare a pre-feasibility study report to adjust the project to implement the next steps. Thu Thiem Theater was chosen as a landmark project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of national reunification (April 30, 2025).
