Familiar soup vegetables such as water spinach, Malabar spinach, chrysanthemum greens... are medicinal herbs for many oriental medicine prescriptions.


The book Vietnamese medicinal plants and herbs by Professor Do Tat Loi provides information about hundreds of medicinal plants. Some of them are also familiar vegetables for cooking soup.

Malabar spinach is also known as gotu kola, bu ngot, and black face god, and belongs to the castor bean family. The plant grows wild and is cultivated throughout Vietnam for its leaves to cook soup. If used as medicine, choose plants that have been grown for 2 years or more.

In 100g of Malabar spinach there are 169mg of calcium, 2.7mg of iron, 123mg of magnesium, 2.4g of manganese, 65mg of phosphorus, 25mg of sodium 25mg... and some essential amino acids for the body.

According to Oriental medicine, Malabar spinach has a cooling effect, has the effect of clearing heat, detoxifying, diuretic, increasing salivation, enriching blood, stopping bleeding, laxative, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, regenerating tissue, treating retained placenta, and thrush.

Amaranth has many varieties with different colors such as amaranth, spiny amaranth, red amaranth, belonging to the custard apple family. The plant grows commonly in many provinces, the leaves can be used to cook soup, the leaves and bark are used as medicine. People use the bark to boil and drink to treat irregular menstruation, anemia, the leaves to boil and drink to treat rheumatism, the bark is ground into powder or soaked in wine to treat malaria, and is used as a tonic.

Chrysanthemum is also known as chrysanthemum, tan o, dong hao, belonging to the daisy family. The plant is grown everywhere mainly as a vegetable, a small amount is used as medicine (used fresh or dried in the shade). It is believed that the plant originated in Europe and northern Asia.

Chrysanthemum greens contain aromatic essential oils, lots of vitamin B, and an average amount of vitamin C. They can be used in medicine to treat chronic coughs, sore eyes, chronic headaches, and hemoptysis.
