Accordingly, those dismissed include: Sergiy Kyslytsya, permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations; Yevheniia Filipenko, permanent representative to international organizations in Geneva; Other ambassadors to important countries such as China (Pavlo Riabikin), Japan (Serhii Korsunskyi), Indonesia (Vasyl Hamianin), Lithuania (Petro Beshta), Slovenia (Andriy Taran), and Rwanda (Andrii Pravednyk).
Mr. Zelenskyy also announced the appointment of new ambassadors, including: Yuliia Fediv as ambassador to the Philippines, Vyacheslav Yatsyuk (Rwanda), Olga Nikitchenko (Lithuania), and Petra Beštu (Slovenia).
The reshuffle comes ahead of Ukraine’s Diplomacy Day (December 22) and is seen as a strategic move to prepare for a challenging new year. Ukraine will face a number of complex diplomatic issues, including maintaining Western support amid doubts from the new US administration, as well as efforts to lay the groundwork for peace talks.
“I have agreed on more than 30 decisions... other decrees will be announced soon following the diplomatic process,” President Zelenskyy said.
The New Voice of Ukraine newspaper commented: "This reform is part of a larger restructuring strategy of the Kiev government, after Ukraine faced many political and military difficulties."
The reshuffle comes as fighting in Ukraine enters its second year, with new challenges requiring Kiev to shore up support from the West. Earlier, on September 5, the Ukrainian parliament approved Andrii Sybiha as the new foreign minister, replacing the resigned Dmytro Kuleba.
In this context, President Zelenskyy’s overhaul of his diplomatic team is an important step to ensure that Ukraine can effectively deal with the challenges ahead, from the battlefield to the international negotiating table.
