Guinea-Bissau President visits the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants in Hai Duong

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences Dao The Anh said that the unit currently has 19 affiliated institutes, with over 2,000 research staff. The institute has participated in many programs to ensure food security in Africa. In Guinea-Bissau alone, the institute is running a project on cashew development, so Mr. Dao The Anh expressed his hope that other countries will continue to support the project to make it successful.

Director of the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants Nguyen Trong Khanh introduced to the delegation some of the research results of the unit that have been effectively applied in the country and the results of cooperation with African countries in recent times. Accordingly, in the past 15 years, the institute has cooperated with a number of African countries such as Senegal, Guinea, Angola, Congo, Sudan, Mali, Mozambique... Up to now, more than 300 experts of the institute have been sent to Africa. For example, in Mozambique, experts have cooperated with technical staff and farmers, helping to improve the level of human resources for the neighboring country, increase the efficiency of rice cultivation in Mozambique, and transfer other varieties such as soybeans and sweet potatoes. Along with that, experts of the institute also help establish new cropping systems to contribute to increasing farmers' income and ensuring food security.

At the working session, the delegation from the host country informed about the specific characteristics of climate and soil conditions, and spent time discussing with experts from the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants about choosing suitable rice varieties, effective farming experience, and environmental protection in agricultural production.

President Umaro Sissoco Embaló said that Guinea-Bissau is an agricultural country, and through this visit and work at the institute, he hopes to exchange and learn from Vietnam's experience in agricultural development. After hearing about the results of cooperation between the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants in some African countries, he hopes that similar agricultural projects will be implemented in Guinea-Bissau in the near future.

Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Hang affirmed that the visit of Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló this time is a milestone marking the expansion of relations between Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau in many fields, including agriculture. According to the plan, during this visit, the two countries will sign an agricultural cooperation agreement. Vietnam is ready to send experts to Guinea-Bissau to promote agricultural development cooperation in the coming time.

Within the framework of the program, the delegation visited the laboratory and high-tech melon production area, and the experimental rice production area at the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants.

The President of Guinea-Bissau and his wife began an official visit to Vietnam on September 5. This is the first visit to Vietnam by a Guinea-Bissau President since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1973. The visit contributes to creating a foundation to promote cooperation between Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau in many fields.
