| The Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs, 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, discussed the promotion and protection of human rights. |
On October 17th, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, the Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly discussed the promotion and protection of human rights, with the participation of numerous UN member states.
During the discussion, the countries emphasized the significance and importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (1993), and affirmed the principles of universal value, interconnectedness, interdependence, and inseparability of human rights.
To promote human rights in the context of today's many common global challenges, countries believe it is necessary to continue promoting multilateralism, strengthening solidarity, coordinating actions, and cooperating to maintain peace , achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and better ensure the rights and essential needs of their people.
| Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang speaks at the discussion session. |
Speaking at the discussion session, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, noted that after 75 years since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, although much progress has been made in ensuring and promoting human rights, the reality has not met expectations due to the impacts of conflict, violence, inequality, poverty, climate change, etc.
In an increasingly diverse world, approaching and addressing human rights issues requires a harmonious combination of general norms and principles of international law with the specific historical, political , economic, and social conditions of each country and region.
Accordingly, cooperation and dialogue among countries to promote and protect human rights is a necessary requirement. Vietnam supports strengthening international exchange and cooperation in the field of human rights on the basis of equal, constructive dialogue, mutual respect and understanding, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, with the common goal of promoting and protecting human rights more effectively. Politicizing human rights issues and interfering in internal affairs will not bring effective solutions.
In promoting human rights, the Ambassador stated that it is necessary to comprehensively promote all rights, with priority given to promoting the right to live in peace, the right to development, the right to access education, healthcare, employment, and the right to combat discrimination and social justice.
Regarding Vietnam, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang highlighted the country's consistent policy, efforts, and achievements in promoting and protecting human rights, emphasizing the nearly four decades of Doi Moi (Renovation) and its people-centered approach.
As a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, Vietnam has actively participated and put forward concrete initiatives such as chairing resolutions upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, climate change, and human rights…
These initiatives by Vietnam are practical and meaningful contributions to the common work of the UN in the spirit of "Mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation, and ensuring all rights for all."
