The Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs, 78th Session of the UN General Assembly discussed the promotion and protection of human rights. |
On October 17, at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, USA, the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly's Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs discussed the promotion and protection of human rights, with the participation of many UN member countries.
At the discussion session, countries emphasized the significance and importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (1993), and affirmed the principles of universal value, interconnectedness, interdependence and indivisibility of human rights.
To promote human rights, in the context of many common challenges in the world today, countries believe that it is necessary to continue promoting multilateralism, strengthening solidarity, coordinating actions, and cooperating to maintain peace, implement the Sustainable Development Goals, and better ensure the rights and essential needs of the people.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang speaks at the discussion session. |
Speaking at the discussion session, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, commented that after 75 years of adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, although much progress has been made in ensuring and promoting human rights, the reality has not been as expected due to the impacts of conflict, violence, inequality, poverty, climate change, etc.
In an increasingly diverse world, when approaching and dealing with human rights issues, it is necessary to harmoniously combine the common standards and principles of international law with the specific historical, political, economic and social conditions of each country and region.
Accordingly, cooperation and dialogue between countries to promote and protect human rights is a necessary requirement. Vietnam supports the enhancement of international exchanges and cooperation in the field of human rights on the basis of equal and constructive dialogue, mutual respect and understanding, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, for the common goal of promoting and increasingly protecting human rights. Politicizing human rights issues and interfering in internal affairs will not bring about effective solutions.
In the process of promoting human rights, the Ambassador said that it is necessary to comprehensively promote rights, with priority given to promoting the rights to live in peace, the right to development, the right to access education, health care, employment, anti-discrimination and social justice.
For Vietnam, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang highlighted the country's consistent policy, efforts and achievements in promoting and protecting human rights, emphasizing nearly four decades of implementing Doi Moi and a people-centered approach.
As a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, Vietnam has actively participated and had specific initiatives such as chairing resolutions promoting the International Declaration on Human Rights, climate change and human rights, etc.
These initiatives of Vietnam are practical and meaningful contributions to the common work of the United Nations in the spirit of "Mutual Respect, Dialogue and Cooperation, Ensuring all rights for all".
