MSc. Dr. Duong Manh Long, Center for Nephrology, Urology and Dialysis, Bach Mai Hospital answered:
Whether hematuria is dangerous or not depends on the cause of the disease: Less dangerous causes such as acute cystitis or small stones are often cured with antibiotics or simple interventions.
Dangerous causes, acute pyelonephritis, vascular malformations, urinary tract cancer or acute glomerulonephritis can be life-threatening if not detected early. It is especially dangerous when hematuria recurs many times, with many blood clots. Or hematuria accompanied by systemic symptoms such as high fever that does not go down, severe anemia, kidney failure or hemodynamic disorders of the patient.
Therefore, people should not be subjective, even if hematuria only appears once or is painless, you still need to see a doctor early. Cancer screening for people over 40 years old, smokers, and those with a family history of cancer should be checked periodically. Monitor symptoms, record urine color, frequency of hematuria and accompanying signs to report to the doctor.
Blood in the urine is a sign that cannot be ignored. Although the cause may be common such as urinary tract infection, urinary stones, but sometimes it is also a warning sign of dangerous diseases such as cancer, renal vascular malformation, glomerulonephritis... Early examination and compliance with treatment regimen helps increase the chance of recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
