Potential and prospects in agricultural production in Bac Giang

In early October, Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet (An Ha commune, Lang Giang, Bac Giang) visited her fields more often. Assessing the production situation of the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop, Ms. Tuyet said that the recent storm No. 3 (Yagi) had caused significant damage to the lives and production of farmers, many rice fields were flooded and fell, almost completely lost. However, the area planted with Du Huong 8 rice variety was almost unaffected, giving very high yields.

As evidence of what she just said, Ms. Tuyet took us to visit the Du Huong 8 (new) rice field with 2.5 hectares of the village. She shared that if in previous crops, planting Khang Dan 18 had to be taken care of hard and the highest yield was only 2 quintals/sao, then this crop planting Du Huong 8 rice was much easier, the yield reached 2.5 quintals/sao, the highest ever.

Ms. Tuyet added that in the past, people in the area mainly planted rice varieties such as Khang Dan 18 and some other varieties. But in recent years, these rice varieties have gradually degenerated and are infected with many pests and diseases. Therefore, when we learned that Du Huong 8 rice variety has good quality rice, we boldly put it into production. Although it is the first crop, it can be said that Du Huong 8 rice variety really has many outstanding advantages.

From sowing to tillering, Du Huong 8 rice variety has the ability to grow strongly and tiller well. Up to now, through measurements, it has been shown that Du Huong 8 rice variety has 7-8 effective tillers/clump, while the control rice variety only has 5-6 tillers.

"The weather in the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop was very complicated. In early September, storm No. 3 was very strong and caused a lot of damage to rice and crops, but the Du Huong 8 variety has very good lodging resistance. Looking at the golden rice fields like this is enough to prove its advantages. There is no need to introduce it much," said Ms. Tuyet.

Sharing the joy of a good harvest with the Du Huong 8 rice variety, Ms. Vu Thi Bac boasted to us that through monitoring the situation of pests and diseases, the Du Huong 8 rice variety is not affected by stem borers, leaf rollers; is not infected with bacterial stripe spots, brown planthoppers, leaf blight... These advantages not only help increase productivity but also reduce costs for us farmers in using pesticides.

"In addition, Du Huong 8 rice variety has a concentrated flowering period of 4-6 days, a growing period of 93-95 days, 3-5 days shorter than Khang Dan 18 variety, helping farmers to harvest earlier. This is especially important in the current context of climate change," Ms. Bac emphasized.

According to the report of the Agricultural Service and Technology Center of Lang Giang district, Du Huong 8 rice variety has good tillering ability and high percentage of solid grains. The yield of the variety reaches over 69 tons/ha, the economic calculation of Du Huong 8 rice variety gives a profit of over 20 million VND/ha, higher than the control variety of 9.5 million VND.

Mr. Ha Van Hoan, Head of Doi Giang Village (An Ha Commune) said that this is the first crop of Du Huong 9 rice variety put into production on local land. Although the weather in the 2024 crop season is not favorable, the Du Huong 8 rice area is very beautiful. Some households have just harvested, the yield is already in hand at nearly 7 tons/ha.

"With the results achieved in this crop, next season we will definitely expand the area planted with Du Huong 8 variety to increase productivity for farmers," Mr. Hoan affirmed.

Mr. Tran Van Doanh, Director of Vinaseed Ba Vi branch said: Du Huong 8 rice variety is one of the new rice varieties developed to improve the productivity and quality of rice products in Vietnam.

Being a heat-sensitive variety, Du Huong 8 can be grown in both seasons. Plant height is 95-100 cm, with good tillering. Leaves are flat, light green, seeds are long and slender, bright yellow. Resistant to some major pests and diseases (rice blast, silver leaf, brown planthopper...), tolerant to intensive cultivation, strong plant and good lodging resistance.

In order to improve quality, adapt well to climate and soil conditions of different regions, and increase resistance to pests and diseases, in recent times, Vinaseed Group has continued to select and improve the quality of varieties. Accordingly, although belonging to the high-quality group, Du Huong 8 (new) rice variety has a short growing period, strong tillering, clear rice, fragrant rice, and blast resistance...

Du Huong 8 is a temperate rice variety, widely adaptable, with a short growing period, so it is very suitable for the crop structure of many provinces and cities across the country.

Du Huong 8 has been put into production in many provinces and regions with similar climatic conditions as Bac Giang. Support from local authorities in providing seeds and cultivation techniques has helped farmers easily access and apply this rice variety in production.

In particular, the agricultural restructuring program for the 2020-2025 period of many provinces and cities across the country has also set a goal of improving the quality of rice varieties, including Du Huong 8. The development and expansion of the planting area of ​​this rice variety not only helps increase farmers' income but also contributes to ensuring food security for the region.

With outstanding characteristics and good adaptability, this rice variety promises to bring many benefits to farmers.
