Thac Ba Hydropower Plant releases floodwaters, Hanoi and 3 provinces urgently respond

Monitoring data shows that at 9:00 a.m. on August 28, 2024, the upstream water level of Thac Ba hydropower reservoir was at 58.02 m; inflow to the reservoir was 281 m 3 /s, discharge was 257 m 3 /s.

Implementing the inter-reservoir operation process on the Red River basin in Decision No. 740/QD-TTg dated June 17, 2019 of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a telegram and order to the Director of Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company to regulate floods on Thac Ba Lake.

Accordingly, Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company opened 2 spillway gates of Thac Ba Hydropower Reservoir at 2:00 p.m. on August 28, 2024. The organization closely monitored the development of floods and rains, safety of works, flow to the reservoir, water levels upstream and downstream of the reservoir and promptly reported to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

At noon the same day, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent an official dispatch to 4 provinces and cities including Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hanoi requesting to focus on implementing measures to ensure downstream safety when operating Thac Ba hydropower reservoir.

The key task is to immediately notify all levels of government, people, and economic organizations operating along the river about the flood discharge information from Thac Ba hydropower reservoir, thereby having plans to adjust production and limit damage caused by reservoir flood discharge.
