Northern hydropower plants increase electricity generation, thermal power plants still have many problems

In the latest update on power supply in the North, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that hydropower plants in the North have increased power generation again. Meanwhile, coal-fired thermal power still has many problems that cannot be resolved.

Northern Hydropower Plant has increased power generation to avoid overflow when water flow to the lake is increasing.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, as of July 5, multi-purpose hydropower reservoirs have moved away from the dead water level and are being mobilized to generate electricity. In the coming time, Lai Chau, Tuyen Quang, and Hoa Binh hydropower plants will increase power generation to avoid overflowing, ensuring water levels before the main flood season due to the large water flow.

According to statistics on July 4, the electricity output of hydropower plants reached 139.1 million kWh, an increase of 20.4 million kWh compared to July 3. Meanwhile, thermal power output reached 263.5 million kWh, a decrease of 8.5 million kWh compared to July 3.

On July 4, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recorded that two coal-fired thermal power plants in the Northern region had reduced capacity (Mong Duong 2, Thai Binh 2). The total capacity that could not be mobilized due to long-term problems at thermal power plants was 2,100 MW; the short-term problem at Dong Trieu thermal power plant was 220 MW.

Also according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, currently, the Central and Southern regions ensure electricity supply and do not have to run on oil in the near future. In some cases of unusually high load or incidents with many thermal power sources, DO oil sources can be flexibly mobilized to meet the demand.

Meanwhile, in the North, which is in the early flood period, it is expected that in the coming time, the water flow to hydroelectric reservoirs in the North will continue to increase and can ensure electricity supply with an average calculated load of about 421 - 425 million kWh/day.

In the extreme case of no flood, the Northern hydroelectric reservoir can still use the remaining water in the reservoir combined with the natural water flow to the reservoirs to meet load demand.

Previously, on the afternoon of July 4, at the regular press conference of the Government, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said that the operation of the power system in July is expected to be difficult, especially the power system in the North when the weather is forecast to continue with heat waves, the water level of hydroelectric reservoirs has improved but is still low.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is directing the Vietnam Electricity Group to ensure four solutions to ensure electricity supply: providing enough fuel for thermal power plants, increasing the ability to minimize incidents and quickly fix incidents; operating hydropower sources reasonably; doing a good job of saving electricity, especially the role of People's Committees, with the focal point being the Department of Industry and Trade; speeding up the investment progress of power source and grid projects.

Mr. Do Thang Hai commented that from now until the end of the year, there will basically be no shortage of electricity to serve production and daily life across the country.
