(Dan Tri) - Ms. NGV, a primary school teacher in Hanoi, predicts that this year's Tet bonus will likely be very low due to the school's deficit in spending funds.
Having worked in the industry for 15 years, Ms. NGV said that the Tet bonus has never exceeded 7 million VND. The last time she received this bonus was 3 years ago. This year, Ms. V. and her colleagues predict that the Tet bonus "won't be much" except for some gifts from the union.
According to Ms. V., the teachers' Tet bonus is not a mandatory amount that the school must pay. This is the amount that is divided if the school's spending fund has any surplus.
"In years when the school has a surplus, each teacher gets a bonus of 1 month's salary, about 7 million VND. In years when the surplus is small, they get 1-2 million VND. There are years when the school has a deficit in funds because of repainting the fence, planting more trees, and replacing chairs in the campus, so that year the teachers will not get any Tet bonus," Ms. V. shared.

Ms. VPTT, a high school teacher in Hanoi, said that her school's Tet bonus is more regular, averaging 3-5 million VND. This is also the amount the school deducts from its own fund to reward staff and teachers in the school.
A survey of some public teachers at suburban schools in Hanoi showed that the common Tet bonus that teachers receive is 1 million VND for high school and 500,000 VND for preschool, primary and secondary schools.
In non-public schools, Tet bonuses are also very diverse.
A principal of a private high school shared: "Tet bonuses are a sensitive issue, and each school is different. Within a school, teachers also receive different bonuses, depending on their ability, position, and seniority.
Therefore, announcing the Tet bonus figure can easily cause controversy and disadvantage other schools."
Mr. NVM, a chemistry teacher at a private inter-level school, said that usually, private schools with reputation, high quality of admission, high tuition, teachers will be rewarded with a 13th month salary. In addition, the Tet bonus also takes into account the seniority and achievements of teachers during the school year.
"Therefore, teachers with high monthly salaries and many achievements in training excellent students will also receive high Tet bonuses. Some teachers receive 50-60 million VND in Tet bonuses," Mr. M. revealed.
For private schools in the mid-range segment, with low quality of admission and low tuition, teachers will receive a bonus ranging from 2-5 million VND.
Recently, MVLomonosov Secondary and High School announced the Lunar New Year bonus for teachers is 1 month's income. This amount is calculated by averaging the income of 12 months in the calendar year. On average, teachers receive a bonus of 22 million VND. The highest amount is 35 million VND.
Current legal documents do not have any regulations on Tet bonuses or 13th month salary for teachers who are civil servants in public service units.
The bonus regime for cadres, civil servants, public employees and armed forces according to Decree 73 of the Government, effective from July 1, only applies to outstanding work achievements and the results of the assessment and classification of the annual task completion level of each individual.
The Decree clearly states that the specific bonus level for each case does not necessarily have to be linked to the salary level according to the salary coefficient of each person.
In addition, this annual bonus fund is outside the reward fund as prescribed by the Law on Emulation and Reward, "determined by 10% of the total salary fund (excluding allowances) according to the position, title, rank, level and military rank of the subjects in the salary list of the agency or unit".
