A short clip about dowry giving at an engagement ceremony in the West recently appeared on social media.

According to the content recorded in the clip, the woman - believed to be the bride's mother - gave the young couple hundreds of hectares of land and jewelry worth up to tens of billions of dong.

At the end of the clip, the mother once again mentioned the value of the 600 hectares of land mentioned above. Receiving the great gift from her parents, the bride and groom bowed their heads in gratitude.

The clip quickly attracted public attention. However, the accounts that posted this information later removed the post.

According to research, the characters in the above clip are Mr. Bui Van Men and his wife - Vice Chairman of Giang Thanh District People's Committee, Kien Giang Province.

Speaking with VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Men said that at his daughter's engagement party held in mid-October, his wife "spoke the wrong thing".

“My wife mistakenly said 60 cong (6 hectares) as 600 cong of land. Rural rice fields are only about 100 million VND/cong, so 60 cong of land is worth about 8-9 billion VND,” Mr. Men shared.

Mr. Men added that because his wife "misspoke", he immediately corrected the matter with the officials of both families.

“In the asset declaration, I declared that my family had several hectares of land and planned to give it to her ( daughter - PV ). This land was reclaimed by my grandparents in the past, my husband and I inherited it from both sides, a little from each side. I reported the whole incident and corrected the information to the agency” - Vice Chairman of Giang Thanh District People's Committee explained.
