(Dan Sinh) - The consultation workshop of the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children was held to share the efforts of the ACWC in promoting and protecting the rights of women and children in the ASEAN region, and to update on the activities chaired by Vietnam in the Work Plan and the country's priority areas on the rights of women and children in the coming time.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Ms. Ha Thi Minh Duc, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, ACWC Representative on Women's Rights of Vietnam) said that ACWC has achieved significant achievements in improving the quality of life for women and children in ASEAN through the implementation of the 5-year Work Plans (2012-2016 and 2016-2020) with activities on promoting gender equality, gender mainstreaming, eliminating all forms of violence against women and children, strengthening the child protection system as well as addressing emerging issues affecting ASEAN women and children.

Ms. Ha Thi Minh Duc hopes that through the Workshop, delegates will understand more about the efforts of ACWC in general and Vietnam in particular in promoting and protecting the rights of women and children at the regional level, and discuss and propose cooperation activities in the coming time.

Also at the Workshop, Ms. Ha Thi Minh Duc introduced the ACWC Action Plan for the period 2021 - 2025 and the implementation of the Plan up to now.

The workshop was attended online by the ASEAN Secretariat and representatives of relevant ministries, sectors, universities, and international organizations in person in Ho Chi Minh City.

Accordingly, the work plan for the period 2021 - 2025 focuses on enhancing support for women and children's issues through effective advocacy mechanisms; building partnerships; raising awareness and capacity on mainstreaming women's and children's rights in the development and implementation of related programs and policies.

The plan includes 29 project activities led by ASEAN member countries, focusing on the following areas: preventing violence against women and children; trafficking in women and children; promoting the rights of migrant women and children; protecting children; women, peace and security; enhancing women's economic empowerment, ensuring the rights of women and children against the impacts of climate change and Industry 4.0.

At the same time, Mr. Nguyen Hiep Tri, Deputy Head of the Department of Child Protection, Care and Gender Equality (Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City) presented measures and models on child protection in the online environment implemented in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the workshop, Mr. Do Duong Hien, ChildFund Vietnam, also shared about the organization's efforts in implementing programs and projects on child protection in each network and proposed recommendations for the coming time.

The ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) was established on April 7, 2010 in Hanoi, on the occasion of the 16th ASEAN Summit.

Accordingly, the ACWC was established with the aim of promoting, protecting, respecting and enforcing the rights of women and children in ASEAN so that they can live in peace, equality, justice and prosperity.

The ACWC comprises 20 ASEAN Member States Representatives on Women's and Children's Rights, with two from each country. Each ACWC Representative serves a three-year term and may be reappointed for a second term. The ACWC meets twice a year.
