Folk dance is a popular cultural and sporting activity enjoyed and practiced by women members throughout the province, bringing joy and health to women of all ages, from urban to rural areas.
Fun and healthy from dancing
“We walk amidst countless golden stars, a forest of fluttering flags/ Excited and enthusiastic footsteps converge here/ Saigon! We have held firm for so many years, and now one joyful day of liberation awaits.” Against the cheerful backdrop of the song “The Nation's Complete Joy,” played from a portable speaker in the corner of the park, members of the Sắc Màu group (Liên Hương town, Tuy Phong district) are enthusiastically performing decisive and harmonious movements of their hands, feet, and bodies.
For over four years now, it has become a tradition for the Colorful Group to gather at 17/4 Park at 5 a.m. every day to practice folk dance and sports exercises. The group consists of 20 members, all in their 50s and 60s, including Mrs. Hai Te, who is 82 years old this year. Despite seeing the benefits of the exercise and the enthusiasm and camaraderie among the women, they still happily participate.
All the dance routines were learned by the group through online searches and YouTube tutorials, followed by instruction from each other. Among the 16 members who regularly perform at cultural exchange programs, Kim Thoa is the most talented and is therefore assigned the task of correcting the movements of the other members. According to them, folk sports dance doesn't require high technical skills; it usually consists of simple, easy-to-remember movements set to lively, cheerful music that expresses love for their homeland. Therefore, even though many members are older, when they immerse themselves in the movements and dances, everyone feels young and energetic, so they master each new routine after only a few practice sessions.
After an hour of exercise and vigorous activity, the women gather to chat and share stories about their families, farming, and business... thus replenishing their energy for a new day, enabling them to live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
Spreading the folk dance sports movement.
With its vibrant and cheerful movements adapted from waltz, cha-cha-cha, tango, etc., and combined with songs expressing love for the homeland and revolutionary songs that have stood the test of time, folk sports dance is easy to learn and dance to, suitable for many ages, and is gaining great appeal among female officials and members throughout the province.
Currently, the province has over 100 folk dance clubs and groups, maintaining the spirit of "Each woman chooses a suitable sport to practice daily." In addition, to improve quality and strengthen bonds among women, many local Women's Union branches organize annual competitions and exchanges between folk dance groups/clubs, selecting performances for cultural programs and conferences. This has created a strong impact, spreading the folk dance movement widely throughout the community. Through training and competitions, women gradually change their posture, communication, and clothing styles to suit modern trends, confidently expressing themselves in front of many people.
In particular, these days, 570 female members selected from folk dance groups in 10 districts, towns, and cities, as well as the armed forces in the province, are enthusiastically practicing for a mass folk dance performance scheduled to take place at the end of April. This is part of the 2025 work program and an achievement to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Binh Thuan (April 19, 1975 - April 19, 2025) and the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).
This creates opportunities for officials, members, and women in the province to exchange cultural and artistic ideas, fostering solidarity among units and localities. At the same time, it contributes to building the image of the modern Binh Thuan woman with four criteria: knowledgeable, ethical, healthy, and responsible towards herself, her family, society, and the country.
