Cam Ha Commune is considered the locality with the most households growing kumquat trees, with all kinds from large kumquat trees to mini pots, at reasonable prices. According to statistics from the People's Committee of Cam Ha Commune, this year alone, the locality has more than 70,000 kumquat pots of all kinds supplied to the market in and outside the province, mainly Da Nang, Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai...
According to records, since more than half a month ago, traders from many places have come to order kumquat trees from garden owners. According to local people, traders often close by garden. That is, after being satisfied, the buyer will deposit to buy the whole garden at the negotiated price. To date, more than 80% of the kumquat trees in Hoi An have been ordered, the rest are displayed for sale in the garden or on the main roads.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Cuong, one of the long-time kumquat growers in Cam Ha, said that up to this point, traders have ordered all of his family’s nearly 1,500 kumquat pots. Prices are stable this year, from 500,000 to 2.5 million VND per pot, depending on size and beauty.
“After deducting expenses, the family has a profit of about 300 - 400 million VND. The family is very excited because this year the traders came to order early, now we are just waiting for them to come and transport them for consumption,” said Mr. Cuong.
According to garden owners, kumquat trees in Cam Ha are grown from small in the fields, and around September and October, they are brought to the garden and put in pots for continued care. Then there are steps such as picking off damaged leaves, watering and some other specialized techniques to help the tree grow large, lush and have a beautiful yellow color. Pots with even, beautiful fruit, with eye-catching shapes, are often more popular with buyers, and have a higher price.
Not only large kumquat trees, many households in Cam Ha also grow mini kumquat trees to meet the tastes of many customers. Compared to large kumquat trees, mini kumquat trees are sold at a cheaper price, often used to decorate tables or cabinets to add spring colors to the house.
“The price of each mini kumquat pot ranges from a few tens of thousands of dong to a few hundred thousand dong, usually fluctuating around 50,000 - 300,000 dong per pot. Through that, people have more income, customers have more choices,” Mr. Nguyen Tuan (Cam Ha) shared more.
At the end of last year, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province recognized Cam Ha kumquat growing as a traditional occupation, which was a great joy for Cam Ha people and kumquat growers in Hoi An city. The recognition of the traditional occupation helps people have more support to boldly develop the profession; at the same time, it creates opportunities to increase income for kumquat growers through cultivation models as well as tourism potential.
Mr. Mai Thanh Hung, Vice Chairman of Cam Ha Commune People's Committee, said that on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025, the whole commune has about 350 households growing kumquat trees, with about 71,000 kumquat pots of various types. Up to this point, kumquat gardeners have been asked to buy by traders who have deposited about 80%. It is expected that if all the kumquat pots are sold to the market during this year's Lunar New Year, local people will earn more than 42 billion VND.
In order to promote and introduce the image of Hoi An kumquat trees to people inside and outside the province, the People's Committee of the commune recently coordinated with relevant agencies and local people to organize the 9th kumquat tree festival in 2025.
“This is an opportunity to honor the cultural identity of craft villages, create conditions for farmers and artisans to exchange; at the same time, organize the display of beautiful and unique kumquat trees, gradually expand the consumption market and create more unique tourism products for the locality,” said Mr. Hung.
