In Cam Lam district these days, farmers are rushing to harvest the last mangoes of the season to sell to traders; mango warehouses are full of goods waiting to be sold. Although the price of mangoes is not high, the output is more stable than in the years affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The price is not high

The family has more than 3 sao of land growing mangoes. In recent days, Mrs. Bui Chau (Tan Hai village, Cam Hai Tay commune) has focused on harvesting and selling mangoes. This year, her family's mango output reached about 6 tons, mainly sold to traders. "Although the price is not as high as in the years before the Covid-19 epidemic, this year, consumption is better, so my family has sold almost all the mangoes in the garden. I save the remaining small amount to sell to retail and regular customers," said Mrs. Chau.

This year, the price of Australian mangoes sold to traders is from 26,000 to 28,000 VND/kg for grade 1 mangoes (usually exported to China); grade 2 mangoes are cheaper, from 10,000 to 13,000 VND; grade 3 mangoes are under 6,000 VND/kg; and Taiwanese mangoes are 5,000 to 7,000 VND/kg lower than the price of Australian mangoes depending on the type... At Thu Quang mango warehouse (Cam Duc town), workers are busy sorting, wrapping mangoes, and packing them to ship to places of consumption; gardeners are continuously transporting goods for wholesale. According to the owner of the mango warehouse, the main consumption market is still the northern provinces and cities, the amount of mangoes exported to China is not much. Therefore, the mango output purchased at the warehouse is only about 70% compared to normal years.

To promote Cam Lam mangoes, many garden owners have known to save bunches of mangoes full of fruit to take pictures and post on social networks, spreading the image of Cam Lam mangoes far and wide.

Along Highway 1, colorful mango stalls are set up by locals. Occasionally, long-distance buses or passersby stop by to buy some fruit as gifts. "My family has sold almost all of it to warehouses, and I have some left to sell retail. Although I don't make much profit, this is a typical gift of Cam Lam, so every season I keep some to sell retail," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Thanh (Cam Duc town).

Support to increase the value of mangoes

According to statistics, Cam Lam district has more than 7,570 hectares of mango, mainly Australian mango (about 3,500 hectares), four-season mango (about 2,000 hectares)... According to Mr. Dang Chi Liem - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cam Lam district, this year's mango crop has about 4,800 hectares of fruit (accounting for 63% of the total area). Mango is the main crop in the locality. Currently, Cam Lam mango is mainly purchased and consumed by warehouses in the district and exported to China through unofficial channels, so prices are unstable; consumption is risky, there are times when the price of fresh mango drops sharply, mango growers face difficulties and losses.

To expand the consumption market, stabilize output, and increase the value of mangoes, the district has selected and supported entities such as enterprises, cooperatives, and cooperative groups to participate in the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program. Up to now, there have been 4 entities with fresh mango products and 1 entity with dried mango products that meet 3-star OCOP standards. This is an opportunity for Cam Lam mangoes to promote, helping to expand the domestic consumption and export markets.

Along National Highway 1 through Cam Duc town, passersby can easily come across colorful and attractive mango stalls.

Mr. Liem said that in the coming time, the locality will continue to support organizations and individuals to practice good production according to VietGAP standards, support OCOP products towards upgrading to 4-star and 5-star standards; coordinate with the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection to issue growing area codes and packaging facility codes to organizations and individuals to promote official exports. Along with that, support research, development, production and consumption of processed mango products, such as: dried mango, mango juice, mango rice paper... to reduce the pressure on consumption of fresh mangoes in the main season and increase the value of Cam Lam mangoes", Mr. Liem said.
