Lacking irrigation water, people in the Thach Khe iron mine area gamble with the weather to grow rice.

Located in the Thach Khe iron mine project area (Thach Ha, Ha Tinh), the internal irrigation system has not been invested in, so the people of Dinh Ban commune are completely dependent on the weather for rice production. Like this year's crop, people are facing the risk of losing everything due to a severe lack of irrigation water.

Video: People reflect on the drought situation of rice.

At this time, many households are in a "sad" situation because the fields are dry, the rice crop is slow to grow, the rice plants are stunted, and the leaves are burnt due to lack of irrigation water.

Leading us to a barren field with stunted rice, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy (Vinh Hoa village) was frustrated because her family's 5 sao of summer-autumn rice, which was sown at the end of July, had grown very slowly and the fields were like wild grass.

Ms. Thuy shared: “Unlike other areas in the province, in Dinh Ban commune, we produce rice in spring and summer crops instead of summer-autumn crops because we depend on rain. In previous years, the summer-autumn crop had a lot of rain so the rice was less stunted, but this year the drought came early and lasted for a long time, there was very little rain so we had to helplessly watch the rice dry out and burn."

The 5 sao of rice fields of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy's family (Vinh Hoa village) are all barren and the rice cannot grow.

According to Ms. Thuy, in the short term, people hope that authorities and sectors will pay attention to supporting more seed sources and upgrading the internal irrigation system to ensure irrigation. In the long term, it is recommended to stop exploiting the Thach Khe iron mine to invest in developing agricultural production.

Not far away, Ms. Dau Thi Hien (Vinh Hoa village) also sighed, because 6 sao of summer-autumn rice could not grow due to lack of water. Ms. Hien confided: "For many years, this area has not had irrigation canals, the planting season depends on rainwater. This crop was planted for more than a month, but the drought lasted so the rice could not grow."

Ms. Dau Thi Hien (Vinh Hoa village) tries to weed, waiting for the rains to "revive" 6 sao of rice.

At this time, Ms. Hien and the people of Vinh Hoa village are taking advantage of weeding and waiting for heavy rain to "revive" the planted areas to salvage a little. It is known that this year's winter-spring rice crop, Vinh Hoa village planted 20 hectares but is at risk of losing everything because up to this point, the rice plants have not grown, many areas have been burned.

The summer-autumn rice crop of Dinh Ban commune farmers usually starts at the end of July and is harvested at the end of October. The reason why the farmers' crop calendar is different from the general calendar of the province is because the local canal system has not been renovated or upgraded due to the planning of the Thach Khe iron mine project. In addition, the groundwater level has dropped due to the consequences of previous iron mine exploitation, making the fields even more barren and barren.

Cracked fields, barren rice... are the common situation in Dinh Ban commune.

In Truong Xuan village, the drought is even more serious, because there is no irrigation water, so most of the rice fields in the area have dried up, the fields are like deserts.

Ms. Tran Ngoc Lanh shared: "Rice production in the winter-spring crop depends entirely on the rain, so people are determined to bet with the rain. If the crop is good, they can get about 1 quintal/sao, but this year, there is a risk of losing everything."

Mrs. Tran Ngoc Lanh has no hope of harvesting from her barren rice fields.

Ms. Lanh’s family cultivates 6 acres of rice fields, and raises only 2 cows and a few chickens, so their income is very difficult. “Since the planting, I have often visited the fields and hoped for rain so that the rice plants can grow. However, at this point, the fields are dry and the rice plants are withered, and we have no hope left,” Ms. Lanh lamented.

It is known that the whole Dinh Ban commune has 220 hectares of agricultural land, of which the rice growing area is 137 hectares. The spring crop has a lot of rain so rice and other crops have escaped drought but the yield is not much, rice alone reaches about 1.7 - 2 quintals/sao. As for the summer crop, in good years the yield is about 1 quintal/sao, like this year, there is a risk of total loss. The villages seriously affected include: Vinh Hoa, Truong Xuan and Van Son.

People of Dinh Ban commune always want to end the Thach Khe iron mine exploitation project to invest in production development.

Mr. Pham Cong Tung - Chairman of Dinh Ban Commune People's Committee informed: "This situation has been going on for many years now when the canal system has been seriously degraded but has not been invested in, making the irrigation water source completely dependent on the weather. However, this is still the main rice growing area of the commune, so we have changed the crop schedule later than the province so that people can take advantage of the rainwater source. However, this year the hot weather has lasted for a long time, causing the rice to dry out and burn, this season, people have sown more than 60 hectares of rice, which is considered a total loss. The locality hopes to soon receive support from higher levels to renovate the canal system, helping people maintain their livelihoods".

For agricultural production to be effective, the most important thing is that the irrigation system must be invested synchronously. However, in Dinh Ban commune, due to the planning of Thach Khe iron mine, the district and locality cannot invest in the irrigation canal system, although we have previously built a plan to bring Ke Go water from Thach Khe commune to serve the people in sowing rice.

The greatest wish of the people as well as the locality is to completely stop the policy of stopping the exploitation of Thach Khe iron mine to stabilize their thinking and feel secure in investing in production development.
