130 hectares of rice devastated after flood, poor commune suffers 10 billion VND in damage

Due to the influence of storm No. 4, Mau Duc commune, Con Cuong district has had prolonged heavy rain with very large thunderstorms.

Realizing the critical situation, the People's Committee of Mau Duc commune directed farmers to harvest rice and crops to reduce damage. However, people have only harvested about 200 hectares, the remaining nearly 130 hectares of fields have not been harvested yet and have been submerged and damaged by floodwaters.

In particular, the harvested rice area was transported home but due to the rain and humidity, there was no sun to dry it, so it germinated and could not be used.

Ms. Lang Thi Giang, Na Duoi village production cluster, Mau Duc commune, has 3 sao of summer-autumn rice, with an estimated yield of 3.5 quintals/sao. However, due to heavy rain, Ms. Giang's family had not yet harvested the rice before it was flooded and sprouted right in the field.

"It rained for 10 days, so even though the rice was ripe, we didn't have time to harvest it. When we harvested it, we didn't know where to dry it. When the water receded, we went to the field to check and most of the rice had sprouted and turned white. We harvested the sprouted rice to feed our livestock. This year, my family has lost everything," Ms. Giang shared.

In the same situation, this season, Mr. Quang Van Binh's family (living in Na Duoi village, Mau Duc commune) planted 3 sao of rice. When hearing that storm No. 4 was about to make landfall, his family mobilized all their manpower to harvest.

"After the harvest, there was heavy rain so the rice could not be dried. Therefore, after only 3 days, the bundles of rice kept in the house had sprouted white sprouts," Mr. Binh shared.

On September 26, speaking with Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Vo Dinh Thanh, Chairman of Mau Duc Commune People's Committee, said that during the recent storm No. 4, the commune was quite seriously affected and suffered heavy damage.

Specifically, the winter-spring rice area was almost completely lost, nearly 14 hectares of aquatic products were damaged by over 30%, roads to villages were landslides in dozens of places with many kilometers, bridges and culverts were washed away and damaged...

"Due to the impact of storm No. 4, the rice fields in our commune that were ready for harvest were almost completely damaged. Rice damage was nearly 7 billion VND; other damage was about 3 billion VND.

We hope that the superiors will support in handling landslides in school areas, households, and inter-village and inter-commune roads. In particular, support for rice and crop damage so that people can stabilize their psychology and revive their economy after the flood, and continue production," said Mr. Thanh.

Mau Duc commune is a locality located in the west of Nghe An with 85% of the population being Thai ethnic group; 10% being Kinh, Hoa and other ethnic groups.

In addition to the main occupation of producing wet rice and upland corn, people here also have traditional handicrafts such as: brocade weaving, making rice wine...

The whole Mau Duc commune has 1,481 households with 6,181 people, of which 273 are poor households (accounting for 19.84%), 446 are near-poor households (accounting for 32.41%).
