The commander of Russia's Biological, Chemical and Radiation Protection Forces, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, and his assistant were killed in an explosion in Moscow on the morning of December 17.
Russian Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said the explosion was caused by an explosive device planted in an electric scooter, according to TASS news agency.

"The investigation shows that on the morning of December 17, an explosive device planted in a scooter exploded near the entrance to a residential building on Ryazansky Avenue in Moscow. The commander of Russia's Biological, Chemical and Radiation Protection Forces, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, and his assistant were killed in the explosion," Petrenko said.
Earlier, emergency services said an explosion rocked the first floor of a residential building on Ryazansky Avenue in southeastern Moscow. The blast damaged the glass facade of the first four floors of the building.
According to Ms. Petrenko, the Moscow department of the Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into the explosion.
"The Russian Investigative Committee's Moscow unit has opened a criminal investigation into an incident on Moscow's Ryazansky Avenue, where two men died," investigators said in a statement. Investigators and criminologists are working at the scene.
Ukraine is pushed into a difficult position in the east.
Mr. Kirillov (54 years old) has led the Biological, Chemical and Radiation Protection Forces since 2017 and became famous as a military official who often presented reports accusing Ukraine and the US of using chemical weapons on the battlefield, according to RT.
Mr Kirillov died a day after the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) formally declared him a suspect in an investigation focused on reports of Russian forces using chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops.
Russia has denied using chemical weapons on the battlefield, saying it destroyed them in 2017, according to RT.
