This morning, students in Ho Chi Minh City completed the first subject of the 10th grade exam, literature. According to many candidates, the 2023 literature exam cannot be "crammed" like previous years because it is based on topics, not on works. The exam only has a general theme of "Letting thoughts be expressed in words..." and gives candidates the opportunity to freely choose suitable works, without requiring analysis of a specific work.
Parents encourage candidates after the literature exam
Specifically, candidates can choose one of two literary essay topics: writing about a stanza or poem about the patriotism of Vietnamese people, or expressing feelings about any work or excerpt about family affection.
At the exam site of Vo Truong Toan Secondary School (District 1), Lam Chu Hoang An, a student at Vo Truong Toan Secondary School, commented that the above literature test not only required the transfer of knowledge from books but also mentioned experiences in society, completely different from last year's literature test. "To prepare for this exam, I have to review all the knowledge in the program, not just 'cram' and that's it," the male student said.

For Vo Hoang Song Ai and Luu Hong An, both studying at Tran Van On Secondary School (District 1), the scope of literary argumentation questions in the 10th grade literature exam is quite broad, and can be applied to many works from the theme of war to protect the nation such as Comrades , Poem about the truck squad without windshields , to the theme of the country's beauty such as Fishing Boats , Talking to Children . "The important thing is how we convince the examiner with our arguments," Hong An shared.

Meanwhile, Song Ai commented: "With the 'open' way of giving questions like this year, 'cramming' and 'rote learning' will not be effective. Because a work includes many different topics such as dedication, patriotism, and camaraderie, the writer needs to broaden his thinking and evaluate whether the intended work is suitable and representative of the topic posed by the question."
"If you 'study by rote', candidates usually only know certain topics in the works. Therefore, if you just mechanically write according to available essays, it is very easy to 'slip' away from the content of the question even if it is 'right on target', such as writing about the poem Comrade but not analyzing patriotism but instead straying to... the image of the soldier", the female student added.

Confident that he could achieve a literature score of 8.5 or higher, Nguyen Pham Vuong Khang, a student at Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School, also chose to review a comprehensive review of key works rather than "memorizing" any particular lesson. However, Khang shared that knowing many and understanding literary works deeply helped him grasp the overview, helping him know how to exploit and analyze them more thoroughly.
"This year's new exam format makes it easier for us to choose works. In addition, teachers can also grade the papers more objectively because they don't have to read the same stereotyped analysis over and over again. Thus, the innovation in the exam format has helped both candidates and invigilators in grading," Khang concluded.
According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, there are about 96,000 candidates registered and will take the 10th grade entrance exam, with the subjects of literature, foreign language, math (if registering for regular 10th grade) and specialized and integrated subjects (if registering for specialized schools and classes; integrated).
