Candidates need to have a 'backup plan' when applying for admission based on high school graduation exam scores

In the online television consultation program "Things to note when registering for admission" held at Thanh Nien Newspaper this afternoon (July 18), university representatives especially noted the number of applications and how to arrange applications to have the highest chance of admission.

Mr. Vu Quang Huy, Deputy Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that candidates should register from 5 to 7 wishes including their favorite majors at the schools they want. From there, they should arrange them in 3 levels in order of priority: schools with high scores, schools with equal scores, and schools with scores lower than their exam scores.

Master Ngo Tri Dung, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Hong Bang International University, also noted that candidates who have been admitted early still have the right to add more wishes using their high school graduation exam scores, but should consider the number of wishes to avoid registering too many, which is both difficult to control and costly.

However, university representatives also especially noted that candidates should not register too few wishes or even be confident in their high scores and only register one wish.

Master Nguyen Ngoc Thach, Deputy Director of the Admissions Consulting Center of the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, explained: "In recent years, when using graduation exam scores for admission, many students were so confident that they got high scores that they only registered for one choice. Due to many factors such as the small quota for that major, the large number of candidates registering, and the scores of the candidates submitting were also very high, the admission score skyrocketed. In the end, the candidates failed even though their scores were not low."

University representatives advise candidates on how to register for admission.

Therefore, Master Thach advises candidates to have a backup plan by registering from 3 to 7 wishes. In which, put the major they like the most at the school with the highest score as the first wish, followed by schools with lower scores. At the same time, they need to add some wishes that are majors close to the major the candidate likes.

"When a candidate fails the first round, the chance of getting into their favorite major in the supplementary admission round is very low because not all schools consider supplementary admission, and if they do, it is only for a few less attractive majors. Not to mention, the benchmark score in the supplementary round may be much higher than the first round," Master Thach shared.

Representatives of the schools also noted that if candidates do not want to fail the university entrance exam after being admitted early but still want to be admitted based on high school graduation exam scores, they should put their wish based on exam scores as priority number 1 and their wish for being admitted early as priority number 2. At the same time, they must pay the admission fee and do the next steps of confirming their admission on the system, and go to the school to do the admission procedures directly.
