In addition, there are also trends initiated from social networks such as changing profile pictures or painting the national flag on roofs, gates, and walls of houses. The fact that people express their patriotism in many different forms is very valuable, however, this sentiment will be more valuable and meaningful when each individual participating is careful in choosing the location, the way to paint the national flag, choosing the appropriate implementation method, avoiding following the trend of formality...

In recent days, on the occasion of major holidays, social networks have been bustling with the trend of painting the national flag on roofs, walls, doors, etc. as a way to express patriotism. In Thanh Hoa, a resident used Photoshop to edit a photo taken from above of Quan Lao town, Yen Dinh district, with many roofs painted with the national flag, which immediately spread on social networking platforms at a dizzying speed. However, besides the comments admiring the impressive image, there were also comments expressing disagreement because the photo did not accurately reflect reality.

Observing the current trend of painting the national flag raises many issues of great concern. First of all, it can be seen that the passionate patriotism of every Vietnamese citizen, now having the opportunity to express through painting the national flag, many people have enthusiastically participated. The image of the red flag with yellow star present in many regions has strongly inspired the community, contributing to arousing national pride, especially in the younger generation.

However, this also revealed shortcomings such as painting the flag incorrectly, the yellow star being painted upside down, or painting the national flag in places that are not really suitable such as dilapidated walls, fences, kiosk doors, garages, etc. On the other hand, using paint that does not guarantee quality causes the color of the flag to quickly fade, become dirty, and lose its aesthetic appeal.

Not to mention that using poor quality paint can also pollute the environment and affect public health. Or climbing onto slippery, sloping roofs to paint flags can endanger the lives of the workers. There have also been many unprofessional behaviors in dealing with newly painted flags, such as some individuals running, lying, sitting, and stepping on the flag on their roofs to take pictures, affecting the dignity of the national flag.

This shows a trend that, although with the legitimate desire to express patriotism, each individual also needs to consider how to do it, absolutely not falling into the situation of following temporary trends for fun and then being irresponsible with the products they create.

Sharing about this trend, Ms. Le Thi Thuy, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Yen Dinh district, Thanh Hoa province, which has received special public attention after photoshopping photos of roofs with the red flag with yellow star, expressed: "Painting the national flag on the roof is a trend, but the trend of attaching the image of the national flag like that is not correct in terms of propaganda. The national flag must be hung in a solemn place, not just anywhere you can arbitrarily draw or hang it."

Poet Nguyen Thuy Quynh, President of the Thai Nguyen Province Literature and Arts Association, analyzed: “When the paint fades or dust sticks to it (for those who paint rolling doors), the “flag” will be very ugly. At that time, it will become offensive. Rolling doors must be rolled up during the day and taken down at night. Who is the flag painted for? Young people are enthusiastically climbing on rooftops, volunteering to paint rolling doors for other houses… should consider these things. Loving the Fatherland for life and doing practical, useful work for the community does not need a trend.”

Poet Nguyen Huu Quy shared: “I think that when every roof is painted with the national flag like that, the artistic effect (beauty) seems to be no longer intact. Each neighborhood, each village has a roof painted with the national flag, which is enough and very beautiful. In my opinion, this honor should be reserved for cultural houses or community activities. Each family should hang the national flag solemnly according to the State's regulations.

Content and form need to be in harmony. Civilized life must be like that. It goes into depth with sustainable social meanings towards noble values of tradition and modernity". Obviously, if the national flag is overused, hanging or painting the flag in unserious places will cause distaste, even have the opposite effect and affect the aesthetics, urban landscape, countryside...

Notably, hostile forces are currently taking advantage of the trend of painting the red flag with a yellow star to distort the policies of our Party and State, and defame the socialist regime in Vietnam. The anti-government elements are claiming that this is yet another “formal disease” that has no real value and only creates empty pride. At the same time, the elements are thoroughly exploiting the incident that occurred in Yet Kieu ward, Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province to defame the Party and State.

Specifically, here, a resident painted the entire wall of his house red and drew a yellow star in the middle, which looked like the national flag. However, after sincere discussion and analysis from the authorities about the legal regulations on the size, form, and image of the national flag and the management, use, and preservation of the image of the national flag, this citizen voluntarily used red paint to cover the image of the five-pointed yellow star on the wall.

The incident happened in 2020, but recently, taking advantage of the flag painting trend, another individual reposted it on social media, with content that did not accurately reflect the nature of the incident. According to this person's writing style, readers misunderstood that the homeowner was forced by the government to remove the red flag with yellow star even though he did not violate the law.

From here, many opinions came in to criticize and condemn the government. Taking this opportunity, hostile forces loudly denounced the “dictatorial Communist Party of Vietnam”, obstructing democracy, human rights, interfering with the people’s freedom to express patriotism...

First of all, it must be affirmed that the people, especially the youth, expressing their love for the Fatherland on the occasion of celebrating the country's major holidays is very valuable and should be recognized. However, the way each individual expresses their feelings must be in accordance with the law and national culture, avoiding deviant and anti-cultural behaviors.

Regarding the trend of painting the national flag, it is necessary to recall the provisions of Article 13 of the 2013 Constitution regarding the specifications of the national flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which is rectangular, with a width equal to two-thirds of its length, a red background, and a five-pointed yellow star in the middle.

On October 2, 2012, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Instruction No. 3420/HD-BVHTTDL on the use of the national flag, national emblem, national anthem, and portrait of President Ho Chi Minh, which stipulates that the shape of the national flag has some points to note, such as: The center point of the yellow star is placed at the intersection of the two diagonals of the national flag. The distance from the center point of the star to the tip of the star wing is one-fifth of the length of the national flag. A star wing has an axis perpendicular to the long edge of the national flag and points straight up. However, a few people when painting the flag have not paid attention to these regulations, causing the shape of the national flag to appear distorted and arbitrary.

The national flag is a flag that represents the nation, a symbol of independence and autonomy, and also a symbol of patriotism and solidarity among the people. It is an important sign that helps distinguish one country from another. Each country chooses its own colors, symbols, cultural and historical characteristics to form its national flag.

The national flag of Vietnam is a red flag with a yellow star, with the red color symbolizing the blood of heroes and martyrs who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the nation, and the five-pointed yellow star symbolizing the unity of the Vietnamese people. Because of the very special meaning of the national flag, many countries in the world, as well as in Vietnam, have issued strict rules when using the image of the national flag...

The trend of painting the national flag on roofs, walls, and gates of houses needs to be identified as a spontaneous and admirable patriotic movement of the masses, but it is necessary to comply with relevant legal regulations such as regulations on the national flag, flag size, pay attention to choosing durable and environmentally safe paint, pay special attention to choosing the location, painting method, and preserving the flag after painting, because this is also a way to show respect for the national flag.

Absolutely do not engage in offensive behavior such as lying down, sitting, or standing on the flag because this action violates the sacredness of the national flag. The cultural sector and functional units need to promptly research, evaluate and have a correct direction for this trend, widely inform society, ensure both showing respect and aesthetics, and advise people participating in this trend to avoid violating legal regulations related to the use of the image of the national flag, which is exploited, distorted and defamed by hostile forces.

Besides, it is also necessary to see that there are many other meaningful ways and activities that help each individual express their love for the Fatherland. There are small but meaningful actions such as protecting the environment, participating in traffic in a civilized manner, being exemplary in obeying the law, donating blood to save lives, etc. Or each person, regardless of the field or profession, if they know how to devote themselves to their work, that is also a way to express patriotism.

What is more important is that love of country needs to be nurtured regularly by each individual, thereby constantly contributing to affirming national pride as well as demonstrating the sense of responsibility of each person in joining hands to build and develop the country to become increasingly powerful.
