The world has endured its 13th consecutive month of historic heat, and this summer is on track to be one of the hottest ever.

The world experienced record-breaking August heat.

According to the initial assessment of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) of the European Union (EU), the average global temperature in August 2024 was at a record hot level.

Although the agency has not yet announced the specific average global temperature in August this year, preliminary data from the agency shows that this figure will be higher than the average temperature of 16.82 degrees Celsius measured in August 2023.

Heat waves have gripped much of the world, including the United States, Mexico, Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. The extreme heat has killed more than a thousand people, prompted public health warnings, and forced school closures. Countries including Australia, Japan, parts of China, and the Svalbard archipelago, located between mainland Norway and the North Pole, all recorded record-breaking temperatures in August, according to other meteorological agencies. As early as August, C3S warned that 2024 was likely to be the hottest year on record, “breaking” the record for heat set in 2023.

Also according to C3S, the average temperature in July 2024 is 1.48 degrees Celsius higher than the estimated average temperature for July in the pre-industrial period 1850-1900.

Scientists warn that the main cause of the current record high temperatures is climate change, which is largely caused by humans, such as production activities that emit greenhouse gases. As a result, the world will witness extreme weather phenomena occurring with increasing intensity and frequency.
