China More than 1,000 years ago, Chang'an was the only city in the world with a population of more than one million people and it adopted a policy of providing guests with accommodation and meals.
Chang'an, with a 3,000-year history, was the capital of 13 dynasties in Chinese history, and is now Xi'an City. During its heyday, Chang'an was the largest and most populous city in the world.
Chang'an was especially prosperous during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), a dynasty that was open and welcomed foreigners to live with the locals, becoming a center of international cultural exchange. Intellectuals from all over the world flocked to Chang'an for sightseeing and tourism.
