Accompanying the delegation were representatives of the Vietnam Education Trade Union, Hanoi Education Trade Union, My Duc District People's Committee, and Ung Hoa District People's Committee.
Care and support for teachers and students affected by storms and floods
According to information from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, as of September 12, the whole city had 236 schools that did not organize in-person classes due to the impact of the storm and the circulation after storm Yagi; many of these schools and many roads were still deeply submerged in water.
With the attention and direction of the City Party Committee, People's Council, and People's Committee of Hanoi, the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of the city have actively mobilized donations to support teachers and students in flood-affected areas.
On the afternoon of September 12, the working delegation visited Ung Hoa and My Duc districts - two areas with many students heavily affected by Typhoon Yagi - to visit, share, and give practical and meaningful gifts, such as: life jackets, towels, candy, supplies, textbooks, notebooks, etc. to help teachers and students overcome difficulties and have enough conditions to continue teaching and learning.
In My Duc district, the delegation directly visited and presented gifts to students and teachers of Hop Thanh B Primary School; at the same time, sent gifts and words of encouragement to teachers and students of 3 schools that were also suffering from flooding, including: An Phu B Kindergarten, An Phu Primary School, and Hop Thanh Kindergarten.
In Ung Hoa district, the delegation visited and presented gifts to students and teachers of Van Thai Primary School. According to the school leaders, Van Thai Primary School has nearly 1,000 students, of which 368 students study at the satellite school that is being flooded. With the attention of the leaders of Ung Hoa District People's Committee and Van Thai Commune People's Committee, the students have been transferred to the main school and are studying 100% in person.
Giving gifts to students and teachers, the delegation hopes that teachers and students will properly implement instructions from all levels, overcome difficulties, ensure safety, and strive to work together to teach well and study well.
Proactive planning, flexible teaching methods
Reporting to the working group, Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa, Principal of Hop Thanh B Primary School, My Duc District, said: the whole school has 35 teachers and staff, 683 students; of which 183 are students from Phu Hien village - an area currently suffering from flooding. Before and after the storm, the school focused on teachers and staff to coordinate with other forces to clean up, sanitize the environment, and ensure facilities to welcome students back to school on September 9.
On September 10, after receiving information from parents about some households in Phu Hien village being flooded, some houses were waist-deep in water, the school reviewed, held a meeting with the Board of Directors, and developed a "3 on-site" scenario for students in need, including "cooking, eating, and sleeping on-site". On the morning of September 12, the Phu Hien village dike overflowed, the school continued to meet to come up with a plan for all students in the village to study 2 sessions/day and eat at the boarding school. The school sent staff to buy food, bowls and spoons, and cook at the school. At noon on September 12, nearly 100 meals were provided to students, and the Youth Union took good care of the boarding school for them.
Also on September 12, more than 10 parents registered to let their children sleep at school because their houses were deeply flooded. For these students, the school will arrange a place to eat and sleep with full blankets; take care of their dinner, breakfast, and shower at school, helping parents feel secure.
In the coming time, if the flood continues to rise, the school will encourage parents to send their children to school to implement "3 on-site" measures to ensure safety; at the same time, we hope to continue to receive attention from all levels and sectors so that the children have adequate conditions to study.
Teacher Kieu Thi Ha, Principal of Van Thai Primary School, Ung Hoa District, shared: On the morning of September 10, prolonged heavy rain caused the school's satellite school in Thai Binh village to be deeply submerged in water. After asking for instructions from the Department of Education and Training of Ung Hoa District and the People's Committee of Van Thai Commune, the school moved the facilities and tables and chairs of this school from the first floor to the second floor to ensure the safety of property.
In order for students to study according to the school year schedule, the school has a plan to switch to online teaching for more than 300 students; however, this plan is not feasible because the students are still young, their parents are away, and there is not enough equipment and internet connection. From here, the school has a plan to move all the subject rooms at the main campus to welcome all students at the satellite campus to study directly.
After arranging the classrooms, there were still not enough classrooms, so the school continued to ask for opinions, borrowed rooms from the village and rooms from Van Thai Kindergarten; at the same time, supplemented necessary equipment such as tables, chairs, fans, electricity, lights, pumps... to ensure that students have a place to study with enough seats, light... The school determined that, with the current complicated weather, the relocation of students to study at the main school would take place in about 2 weeks to 1 month. Thanks to the active participation of all levels and the consensus of parents, up to now, 100% of students at the satellite school have been able to study directly according to the program; at noon, students are given full boarding meals (if parents wish).
The delegation praised the high sense of responsibility of teachers in organizing meals, sleep and rest for students at school in cases where their families were flooded; at the same time, they said that the schools had correctly and accurately followed the direction of the City People's Committee and the Hanoi Department of Education and Training in ensuring both safety and maintaining learning for the students.
According to Director of Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong, for areas with deep and prolonged flooding such as Chuong My, Ung Hoa, Thuong Tin, Quoc Oai districts..., implementing the direction of the City People's Committee, the Department has requested the Departments of Education and Training and school principals to develop long-term plans in the spirit of flexible teaching methods, suitable to the specific situation of each school and each locality, including: online, in-person, online combined with in-person or assigning homework and tasks to students. The Department also directed units to have environmental sanitation plans, ensuring the best and safest conditions to welcome students back to school after the flood recedes....
On the morning of September 12, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training and the Hanoi Education Trade Union visited and presented gifts to teachers and students of Hoan Kiem district; and directly encouraged teachers and students of Chuong Duong Primary School.
Previously, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training contributed 1 billion VND to the Vietnam Education Trade Union to share and help students and teachers affected by storm Yagi in the northern provinces.
