Through inspection, the working group discovered that taxi with license plate 60E-00734 of Saigon Cheap Taxi (Cheap Taxi) under Saigon Transport Group Corporation violated regulations by installing a fare meter.
Specifically, the car has an auxiliary switch located under the gear lever, with an electric wire attached to the fare meter to activate it. When the driver shifts gears or shifts gears, the fare increases by 3,000 VND/time. The driver is required to drive from the airport's international terminal to Tran Quoc Hoan Street and then back. With a total round trip distance of more than 2 km, the fare meter shows 420,000 VND.
On the same day, taxi number 51F - 49526 of Saigontourist taxi company, driven by Mr. Nguyen Trung Minh, was also discovered to have 2 auxiliary switches attached to the fare meter. The inspection team asked the driver to drive from the international terminal to Tran Quoc Hoan street and back to the international terminal, the actual fare was 54,000 VND, but when the driver used the auxiliary switch, the fare displayed on the fare meter increased by more than 540,000 VND, 10 times higher.
The inspection team drew up a record of the violation of installing fare meters in violation of regulations, each driver was fined 700,000 VND, and the parent company was fined 11 million VND.
A representative of the Department of Transport Inspectorate said that they are coordinating with relevant units to strictly handle the situation of "ripping off" passengers and charging excessively high transportation fees, thereby building the image of a civilized and modern Ho Chi Minh City. In case tourists notice unusually high fares, they can immediately report them via the department's hotline or report them to Tan Son Nhat airport, and the forces will coordinate to conduct inspections and handle the matter.
