On the sidelines of the APEC Trade Ministers' Meeting and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Trade Ministers' Meeting in Detroit, USA, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien worked with Mr. Steve Biegun, Senior Vice President of Boeing Corporation.

At the meeting, the two sides discussed the Boeing Group's cooperation in a number of specific areas, such as helicopters, transportation, and investment in developing the supply chain of aviation spare parts and equipment in Vietnam.

In particular, the Group accepted the invitation of Minister Nguyen Hong Dien to send senior personnel to participate in the international supplier connection event - Viet Nam Sourcing 2023 organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on September 13-15 in Ho Chi Minh City to introduce and seek cooperation opportunities with Vietnamese enterprises in Boeing's global value chain.

At the meeting, Mr. Steve Biegun said that Boeing has opened a representative office in Vietnam due to the potential and important position of this market for the Group's business strategy.

In the coming time, Boeing will focus on three main directions in Vietnam: further enhancing commercial relations in the aviation sector with airlines; cooperation in a number of specific fields, such as helicopters and transportation; and investment in developing the supply chain of aviation spare parts and equipment.

During the meeting, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien highly appreciated Boeing Corporation's desire to build a strategic partnership in the Vietnamese market and to cooperate more deeply with Vietnam to develop the aviation ecosystem. This will also contribute to promoting bilateral trade between the two countries.

Several suppliers in Vietnam have been supporting the production of some Boeing commercial aircraft components such as some aircraft structural parts, components, aircraft interiors and composite materials.

However, businesses participating in the aerospace supply chain still mainly come from foreign-invested enterprises from the United States, Japan, South Korea, etc.

Purely Vietnamese enterprises can only produce small components with low added value. Therefore, Boeing’s investment in Vietnam in the coming time needs to contribute positively to creating a stronger spillover effect on improving the production and manufacturing capacity of Vietnamese enterprises.

The Minister said that since 2020, the aerospace industry has been included in the list of high-tech industries that Vietnam prioritizes for investment and development.

In the mechanical engineering industry, in Vietnam, large, purely Vietnamese corporations have been formed with capacity, and are also ready to invest in research and development, machinery and equipment to pursue larger goals in the high-tech field and can completely become potential partners of Boeing in the future.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is ready to coordinate with strategic partners such as Boeing in designing a favorable cooperation framework, ensuring sustainable development for the aviation support industry in Vietnam; helping suppliers to gradually participate in Boeing's global value chain, while helping the Group realize its strategic goals and long-term vision.

The Minister suggested that Boeing accelerate the process of developing suppliers in Vietnam, build specific connection and support projects; spend time surveying, working, and consulting with supporting industry enterprises that can meet the requirements set by the company; and send experts to support enterprises in training personnel and transferring technology when they meet the requirements.
