Today (March 21), at the Oval Office of the White House, US President Donald Trump announced that Boeing Corporation has become the prime contractor for the US Air Force's sixth-generation fighter development project, the F-47.

US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on March 21 announced the decision to award the contract to manufacture the sixth-generation F-47 fighter to Boeing.
The sixth-generation fighter contract is being implemented to continue efforts to replace the F-22 Raptor stealth fighter with a more modern successor that can coordinate operations with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), according to AFP.
"After a fierce and meticulous competition among some of America's leading names in aerospace, the U.S. Air Force will award the contract to build the next-generation air superiority fighter (NGAD) platform to Boeing," President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
The US leader said he could not disclose the contract price for security reasons, and praised the sixth-generation US fighter as "a beautiful number" when it is called F-47. Mr. Trump is the 47th president of the United States.
The F-47 fighter jet will replace the F-22 Raptor, a fighter jet that began development in the 1980s.
The F-22 is equipped with stealth technology, high maneuverability and the ability to supercruise or sustain supersonic flight without afterburner.
The announcement of the main contractor in charge of the US sixth-generation fighter development project comes days after Chinese social media circulated images of what is believed to be China's sixth-generation fighter, the J-36, in a recent test flight.

The fighter jets were filmed with their landing gear retracted, and were not escorted by any other aircraft.
The Global Times on March 17 quoted Chinese military analyst Song Zhongping as saying that if the new images are confirmed to be real, this means the new aircraft is making good progress with flights being carried out at short intervals.
