The percentage of students winning national prizes will account for 60% of the total number of contestants, an increase of 10% compared to before, to conform to the practice of Olympic competitions.
On October 12, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the regulations for the national excellent student exam with many changes compared to the regulations applied since 2011. The highlight is the increase in the number of candidates and the winning rate.
Previously, the Ministry stipulated that each unit's team for each subject must have a maximum of 6 contestants. Teams with this number and with 80% or more of the contestants winning prizes in two consecutive national excellent student competitions will be considered for an increase of up to 10 contestants. In Hanoi, the team for each subject can have a maximum of 12 contestants and can be considered for an increase of up to 20 if the above conditions are met.
However, according to the new regulations, the maximum number of candidates for each subject is 10, except for Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, it is 20.
At the same time, the percentage of students winning prizes will account for 60% of the total number of contestants, an increase of 10% compared to before. The number of first, second and third prizes will not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes; the number of first prizes will not exceed 5%. According to the Ministry, this ratio is to ensure compliance with the regulations of regional and international Olympic competitions.
Candidates who participate but do not win any prizes will also be granted certificates by the Ministry of Education and Training so that they can keep their information for a long time, while previously this was not the case.
Based on the exam results, the Ministry will call a number of students to select the international Olympic team (Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics). The number of students called will not exceed 8 times the number officially selected to compete in each subject.
In addition, the Ministry can select candidates who did not take the national excellent student exam that year but took the regional and international Olympic exam the previous year. This is a new point compared to the old regulation.
Another adjustment by the Ministry is to eliminate the practical exam session for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Instead, the exam will have questions requiring candidates to solve using knowledge related to experimental and practical skills. As for the exam to select the international Olympic team, the practical exam session will still be maintained.
The Ministry also added a number of regulations related to supervision, inspection, and examination, regulations related to the transportation of exam papers, the form of testing on computers with local network connection for the subject of Information Technology, and flexibility in the location of the international Olympic team selection exam.
The new circular of the Ministry of Education and Training takes effect from November 25, which means it will be applied immediately to the national excellent student exam this school year.
Last school year, more than 4,500 candidates took part in the national excellent student competition in 12 subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Information Technology, Literature, History, Geography, English, French, Russian and Chinese. More than 2,200 candidates won prizes, with Hanoi leading (141 students), followed by Nghe An (87), Vinh Phuc (79), and Hai Phong (76).
Prize-winning students will be given priority for direct admission to universities and colleges. Candidates who are selected for the International Olympic team will be exempted from the high school graduation exam.
