Why can filler injections be deadly?

VnExpressVnExpress29/06/2023

Filler injections at a disreputable medical facility, in large quantities, can lead to complications, pulmonary embolism, and rapid death.

On June 28, Ho Chi Minh City police provided information about a 27-year-old woman who died after undergoing breast augmentation at a hotel on Le Hong Phong Street, District 10. After receiving a breast augmentation solution (filler), the victim showed signs of foaming at the mouth, with no pulse and blood pressure, suspected to be due to drug shock. The patient was treated at Van Hanh General Hospital but did not survive.

Biological fillers, also known as fillers, are increasingly used in cosmetic services thanks to their simple technique, little pain, and immediate and long-lasting effects. Fillers have the effect of filling the tissue, so the injected area will be tight, full, and rejuvenated. Because of this mechanism, many people believe that fillers can help with buttock augmentation or breast augmentation, without the need for surgery.

However, according to experts, filler injections are only suitable for small areas such as the nose, chin, cheeks, lips, and ears. The chest area is sensitive, and injecting large amounts of filler can cause many complications.

Specifically, at a mild level, patients may experience swelling, bruising, pain, and allergies (itching, rash) in the chest area. Some common allergic reactions include necrosis of the mammary glands, soft tissue, skin, nipples, and possible blood infection leading to death.

In more severe cases, if injected into blood vessels or arteries, it can cause vascular occlusion and tissue necrosis around the chest area. Risk of pulmonary embolism, acute pulmonary edema, respiratory failure, and rapid death if injected intravenously.

In particular, this technique requires to be performed by well-trained doctors at cosmetic facilities with sterile medical equipment. If the injector is not trained and does not follow professional principles, it can cause complications for the user.

Dr. Tong Thanh Hai, Head of the Department of Microsurgery and Reconstruction, National Burn Hospital, added that many cases of injection Fillers of unknown origin, resulting in this substance remaining in the body, creating silently progressing infections.

"In the long term, this substance deforms the breasts, leaves ugly scars, requires multiple treatments, and affects the patient's health, psychology, and finances," said Mr. Hai.

Doctors recommend that to limit risks, women should use fillers licensed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Ministry of Health and provided by reputable medical experts, pharmaceutical companies, and pharmacies.

When people want to have breast augmentation, they need to learn carefully and go to a reputable medical facility for advice, and should not inject large amounts of filler. Currently, there is no type of filler that is absolutely safe for breast augmentation, so experts do not recommend breast augmentation in this way. Some alternative methods are recommended such as autologous fat injection, breast implant, and micro-flap surgery (for some cases of loss of mammary glands due to removal).

In particular, Mr. Hai advised women not to blindly believe in advertisements such as painless, instant beauty, safe, cheap, which will cause many unpredictable consequences.

Recently, many fatal cosmetic accidents have occurred in Ho Chi Minh City. In April, a 45-year-old Taiwanese woman died after cosmetic surgery at Korean Star Hospital. Last December, a 25-year-old woman died after being injected with anesthetic and anesthesia to prepare for fat-burning surgery on both arms and left chest at Key Beauty Center. Previously, a 61-year-old woman died during breast fat grafting at Kangnam Saigon Cosmetic Hospital.
