There was a time when she decided to put her studies on hold to work for a living, but her love and passion for traditional musical instruments urged Luu Thuy Duong, currently a second-year student at the Provincial College of Culture and Arts, to overcome difficulties and pursue an artistic career. 2 years of playing the bamboo flute and many achievements in this subject have made her confident in her choice and determined to contribute to preserving and spreading the beauty of traditional musical instruments, especially to the younger generation.

The arduous journey to art

After winning the championship at the Young Art Talent Competition of Thai Binh Province in April 2024, Luu Thuy Duong tried hard to practice and participate in the traditional art programs of the Provincial College of Culture and Arts with the traditional orchestra in localities and schools in the province. Not only performing with the orchestra, she also had solo performances on the bamboo flute. Her path to art was full of hardships and difficulties, so Thuy Duong hopes that through her performances, she can contribute to "instilling" enthusiasm in young people with the same passion.

About the first steps to music, Duong shared: That was the time when I stopped studying after graduating from junior high school. After a hard day's work, I accidentally went to see a music show in my hometown and was attracted by the orchestra, especially the sound of the bamboo flute, which made me feel my soul at peace, all my worries seemed to disappear. After many days, I still couldn't stop thinking about the flute, about the deep, melodious sounds and decided to learn about this musical instrument. The more I read information and watched videos about the bamboo flute, the more interested I became. Gradually, over time, I joined some groups on social networking sites to get long-time members to share about how to use the instrument. I thought this would probably be a hobby to help me relax after work, while self-studying was very difficult, so I decided to find a place to teach bamboo flute to be guided to practice and satisfy my passion. Coming from my hometown in Hung Ha to Thai Binh city with the desire to study art after work, I was guided by teachers at the Provincial Youth Center to study at the intermediate level at the Provincial College of Culture and Arts to complete the high school program while receiving intensive training in traditional musical instruments. At that time, the school was also in the enrollment stage, so I applied, registered to try my hand and was lucky to be accepted.

Happy to be trusted

Despite not receiving the approval and support from her parents on her artistic path, Thuy Duong has always been persistent and made efforts to pursue her passion. Up to now, when she has "reaped" some initial successes on this path, she feels lucky to have been professionally trained because after a short time of playing bamboo flute as an amateur, when taught by teachers, she realized that in the process of self-study, she made many basic mistakes that, if passed over a long period of time, could become a habit that is difficult to correct.

In 2022, after the first semester of studying bamboo flute, Duong was encouraged by his teachers to register and try his hand at the I Love Folk Songs contest organized by the Provincial Youth Center. With the support and guidance of his teachers, the encouragement and support of his friends, the third prize he won in this contest helped him gain more confidence in his choice, and at the same time became the motivation for him to be determined to conquer his passion in the 4th Thai Binh Province Young Art Talent Contest in 2024. This time, Duong's preparation for the contest was more solid because his stage presence was honed through many art programs participating with the school's traditional orchestra.

Regarding her first prize performance, musician Nguyen Quang Long, a judge of the competition, shared: Through her performance, Luu Thuy Duong led the listeners' emotions to follow the inner world she put into the bamboo flute, which is extremely necessary for an artist when standing on stage.

At the same time, she also received advice from the judges about continuing to develop her talent, studying and researching more deeply about the bamboo flute after graduating from the Provincial College of Culture and Arts. Admitting that the success she has achieved is both a pressure and a motivation for her to study and work more seriously, Luu Thuy Duong said that the difficulties on her artistic path have increasingly helped her to be more determined in her desire to contribute to preserving the fine traditional values of national music.

The school pays special attention to finding and training young talents in all fields of culture and art, especially traditional art. With that strategy, the school promotes innovation in teaching methods, improves facilities so that students are given the best conditions to study and practice their profession right from school. In addition, for students participating in competitions, in addition to having a timely incentive mechanism to motivate them to maximize their abilities, at the same time, assigning staff and lecturers to directly guide, exchange, and provide professional orientation so that students can promote the knowledge and experience they have learned and practiced.

Teacher Cao Quang Huy, lecturer of Traditional Musical Instruments Department

Luu Thuy Duong has a passion for art, especially bamboo flute. Right from her first year at school, she has been diligent in practicing, quickly absorbing musical knowledge, and diligently practicing professionally. Through competitions, her dream has become more and more intense, she has worked hard to practice her skills, develop her performance style and convey her musical sense into musical works. Knowing her family circumstances and disadvantaged learning conditions, the school teachers not only created the best conditions for her to practice and pursue her passion, but also regularly encouraged her, hoping that she would persevere with her own dream.
