Visiting the lychee "capital" of Bac Giang on a scorching hot day in mid-June, we visited the largest lychee purchasing locations in Luc Ngan district to find out more information about lychee prices.

According to our records, at the largest purchasing points in Luc Ngan district such as Chu market, Kim market, and Kep market, there is no longer any traffic jam like every year, and the number of people bringing lychees here to sell to traders is sparse.

Full baskets of fabric with beautiful designs are always "hunted" by traders at high prices.

Explaining this, some lychee traders at the above locations said that because this year's lychee crop failed, output decreased, so at this time the supply is scarce, few households have lychee to bring here to sell.

Each basket of fabric weighs from 1 to 2 quintals and requires 3 to 4 people to carry it.

Sharing with us, Mr. Suc (Luc Ngan, Bac Giang) said that his family has more than 100 Thanh Ha lychee trees, but due to crop failure, they were only able to harvest more than 3 tons of lychee.

"Since I brought the lychees here to sell, the highest price that traders have paid is 75,000 VND/kg. Today, my basket of lychees is worse than usual, so they only got 71,000 VND/kg. As for the lychee price of 96,000 VND/kg, I have never heard of it and have never sold it for such a high price," said Mr. Suc.

People are excited because fabric is bought at high prices.

When asked about the price of lychee this year, Ms. Lan, a lychee trader at Chu market, said that the price of late lychee this year is 3 to 4 times higher than last year. At the same time in 2023, the price of lychee fluctuated from 12 to 20 thousand VND/kg.

Large lychee, beautiful appearance, no stem worm, smooth skin are purchased by traders at high prices.

"Lychee prices started to increase from June 1, ranging from 65,000 VND to 80,000 VND per kilogram. Although the price of lychee has decreased, it is not significant, still remaining at a higher level of 70,000 VND per kilogram for beautiful lychees with large fruits, while the price of bad lychees ranges from 50,000 to 65,000 VND per kilogram," said Ms. Lan.

The highest price of lychee is up to 80,000 VND/kg.

When asked about the information about 96,000 VND/kg of lychee in Luc Ngan being spread on social networks, Ms. Lan said: "We do not buy at that price here. Starting from June 2 to June 4, 2024, because we had to buy urgently to make the shipment to China on June 5, the price of lychee peaked at 80,000 VND/kg."

According to some residents and traders, the lychee price of 96,000 VND/kg on social networks is a price that traders wrote backwards to post online for fun, and is not real.

"The actual price is 69,000 VND/kg of lychee, but they intentionally wrote it backwards, took a photo of it and posted it online for fun, but in reality, lychee does not have that price," said a local resident.

Talking to us, a leader of the agricultural cooperative of Luc Ngan district said that this year, lychee crop failed, so the price is very high, ranging from 50,000 to 80,000 VND/kg depending on quality and design.

When asked about the information about 96,000 VND/kg of lychee in Luc Ngan shared on social networks, this leader said: "This information is incorrect, the highest price of lychee is only up to 80,000 VND/kg".
