Bai Thuong Dam built on the upper Chu River (Thanh Hoa) is considered the first modern irrigation system built in Central Vietnam.

With a length of 325km, the part flowing in Vietnam is 160km, Chu River passes through Que Phong district (Nghe An) and Thuong Xuan, Tho Xuan, Thieu Hoa (Thanh Hoa).

During the period 1921-1929, France built the Bai Thuong dam, 160m long and 23.5m high; irrigating more than 50,000 hectares of two-crop rice fields in Thanh Hoa.

On December 2, 2006, the Chu River was blocked, the water flow was led to the Cua Dat irrigation and hydroelectric reservoir (with the largest capacity of ~ 1.45 billion m3 of water) to irrigate 87,000 hectares of agricultural land in Thanh Hoa province, and at the same time generate electricity with a capacity of 97MW, providing domestic water for residents of the lowland districts and Thanh Hoa city, and supplying water to the Ma River in the dry season.

Temple of Queen Mother Pham Thi Ngoc Tran in Thuong Voi village.

Not only playing an important role in production and daily life, Chu River also carries mysterious stories and historical vestiges.

Specifically, in the river section flowing through Xuan Hoa commune, Tho Xuan district (Thanh Hoa), there is a large, flat, rectangular rock that has been lying still for hundreds of years.

Through legendary oral stories, local people still believe that this is the tomb of Queen Mother Pham Thi Ngoc Tran - a loyal woman who sacrificed herself to the river god, helping Le Thai To "sleep on thorns and taste gall for ten years", defeating the Ming invaders, regaining the country and opening the most prosperous period of feudalism in our country.

After King Le Loi ascended the throne, he built a temple to worship her, called Quoc Thai Mau Linh Tu in Thuong Voi village. In the 16th year of Bao Dai (1942), the Chu River changed its course, the temple was in danger of collapsing into the river, so the people moved the temple to its current location.

In addition, more than 30 artifacts from Do Mountain are present at Thanh Hoa Museum, including stone cores, flakes and axe artifacts.

The flakes here are typical of Clacton flakes – a basic technical feature in the tool making of “wise man” of the early Paleolithic era.

The flakes were used as a main tool, which could be used for cutting, peeling, scraping, and chopping. Based on the type and technique of making stone tools at Do Mountain, researchers believe that Do Mountain was once a “workshop” for making tools for early Paleolithic residents.

This proves that the land along the Ma and Chu rivers was once one of the cradles of human civilization.

Chu River possesses a rich and lush ecological landscape.

Chu River has contributed to portraying the beautiful and unique appearance of Thanh Hoa's material and spiritual life. Compared to the entire Ma River, the forest in this area is thicker and has more old forests.

Located in the Nam Song Ma mountain range, including many of the highest mountains in Thanh Hoa province, it is made up of many different types of rocks, leading to a very complex terrain, forming a fascinating ecological landscape.

Not only creating historical archaeological value, the place where Ma River and Chu River pass through has "formed" many ancient villages such as Son Oi (now Dinh Cong Commune, Yen Dinh), Da Qua Village (Ha Trung)... In particular, Dong Son ancient village has now become a historical relic.   preserved
