Small urinary stones can be excreted in the urine, but those larger than 20 mm cause pain, reducing men's health and fertility.
Urinary stones are mineral crystals that crystallize in organs of the urinary system including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and prostate.
Dr. Ly Minh Hoang, Department of Urology, Center for Urology - Nephrology - Andrology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that large stones rub against the inside of the kidney, ureter, and bladder, causing colic pain in the hip and back, especially during strenuous exercise. In addition, stones cause painful urination, frequent urination, urinary retention, blood in the urine, and pain during sex, making men uncomfortable, reducing sensation, and causing erectile dysfunction.
A 2021 study by American and Chinese experts on 87 men with bladder stones found that 95% had signs of erectile dysfunction. Three months after bladder stone removal surgery, 77 of these men, or 88.5%, had significant improvement in their dysfunction.
Large stones also block the urinary tract, causing reflux and water retention in the kidneys, which over time can lead to impaired kidney function. Men's health also declines, the body becomes tired, and they avoid "lovemaking".

Dr. Hoang recommends that men should drink plenty of water, from two liters per day to prevent kidney stones, bladder stones in particular and urinary stones in general. It is best to drink filtered water, fruit juice; limit or do not use tea, coffee, beer, wine, carbonated soft drinks.
Avoid salty foods; reduce protein; reduce consumption of foods rich in oxalate such as spinach, almonds, potatoes, beets... Avoid holding urine, regular exercise and sports also help men reduce the risk of stone formation.
Doctor Hoang recommends that men with persistent lower back pain, urinary retention, painful urination, blood in the urine... should go to the hospital for examination and early treatment to avoid kidney stones and bladder stones getting larger, affecting health and quality of life.
