Students admitted based on academic records are not inferior to those admitted based on exam scores.

The university results of candidates who passed with their transcripts are not inferior to those who passed with their graduation exam scores, so many schools still trust this method.

By mid-January 2024, about 60 universities announced admission based on transcripts. Although some schools reduced their enrollment quotas and added additional admission requirements for this method, the number of schools considering transcripts was generally similar to previous years.

"Admission results based on academic records still have a certain level of reliability," said Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry.

Through comparing the academic scores of students admitted in 2021, Mr. Nhan said that the academic ability of those admitted based on their transcripts is equivalent to the group using high school graduation exam scores.

Specifically, on a 4-point scale, from 0 to 2.3 points, the number of candidates in the two groups is the same. At around 2.4-3.1 points, the number of students admitted based on academic records is slightly higher. But at around 3.2-3.8 points, the number leans towards the group admitted based on exam scores.

The graduation ranking statistics from 2019 to 2023 of students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade also show that the results of the group admitted based on academic records are equivalent to those based on graduation exam scores. At each ranking level, the difference between the two groups only fluctuates from 0.03 to 4.12 percentage points.

"The numbers show that the results of admission based on high school transcripts are similar to those of admission based on exam scores, not as different as society thinks," said Mr. Son.

The data announced by Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Pedagogical Universities at the end of 2023 is similar. At Hanoi Pedagogical University, with the 2022 enrollment, after one year of study, the percentage of students with good grades in the group considering transcripts and the group using graduation exam scores is between 17-20%, and excellent 3-7%.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, statistics of more than 10,000 students admitted in the last three years show that the group admitted to the school based on their transcripts always had an average GPA 0.11-0.25 higher than the group admitted based on their graduation exam scores.

Universities believe that the quality of students recruited based on transcripts is guaranteed by considering admission based on the average score of 5-6 semesters of high school, instead of just using the 12th grade results.

At Nha Trang University, 2017 is the first year the school uses academic records for admission. The admission score is the total score of three grade 12 subjects according to the combination, the threshold to ensure input quality ranges from 18-24.

Associate Professor Dr. To Van Phuong, Head of Training Department of Nha Trang University, said that after two years of implementation, the rate of students with poor academic performance in these two admission courses has reached 20% (about 1,000 students), 10% higher than previous years. Among the students who voluntarily dropped out or were forced to drop out in the first 1-2 semesters due to poor academic performance, most of them entered the school thanks to the admission based on their academic records.

"There are students whose admission scores based on their transcripts are 24-25 but their high school graduation scores are only 8-10, a huge difference," said Mr. Phuong. Therefore, the school stopped considering transcripts in 2019 and will return in 2020 but change the admission method. Candidates must use the scores of four subjects (including Math, Literature, English and one subject appropriate to their major) throughout six semesters of high school, along with special conditions for English scores or high school graduation scores in some specific majors.

"With this adjustment, candidates will be evaluated comprehensively and the results will be more stable," said Mr. Phuong.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry also uses the average score of 5 semesters of three subjects in the admission combination, and sets a "quite high" floor score - 21 points. Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan said this method evaluates the candidate's overall ability more comprehensively than just using the 12th grade score, helping schools select students with sufficient academic ability.

Similarly, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Pedagogical Schools also consider the results of the transcripts from six semesters of high school. The schools also set some additional conditions such as good 12th grade performance and a graduation score of 8 or higher.

Master Phan Le Quoc, Deputy Head of Training Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, assessed that the results of admission based on transcripts are still positive. Therefore, the school continues to reserve a maximum of 10% of its enrollment quota for this method this year. Dozens of other schools also maintain admissions using this method.

Sharing at an admissions consultation session this month, Associate Professor Dr. Le Hieu Giang, acting principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, said that the admission method is only one of the factors affecting students' learning outcomes, because their awareness and abilities also change and develop during the learning process.

"The training process in high school is good, meeting the requirements of universities. In the long run, the training process is important, it is the deciding factor in the quality of learners," said Mr. Giang.
